Veteran broadcaster and former Australian politician Derryn Hinch has died at the age of 82
The outspoken media personality’s death was confirmed on 3AW, where he had broadcast for over three decades
“Very saddened to report Derryn Hinch has died,” Peter Ford said
“What a life and career. Fearless and provocative. He achieved all he wanted to do in life. RIP.”
Hinch was open about a long battle with serious health issues, including liver cancer and cirrhosis, which led to a life-saving liver transplant in 2011 after doctors warned he had less than a year to live without one
3AW issued a formal statement on the passing of the broadcaster, who began at the station in 1979

It said he established himself as a “formidable presence” during his eight years hosting his morning show
He eventually left the station in 2012, when his contract ended and Tom Elliott took over the coveted Drive program
“Throughout his tenure, Hinch was never a broadcaster to stand still,” the network said
“Whether championing a cause, challenging authority, or navigating the intense controversies that occasionally marked his career, Hinch remained steadfast in his commitment to his craft
His impact was recognised widely within the industry, culminating in his 2010 induction into the Australian Commercial Radio Hall of Fame

“Listeners, even those who did not always agree with his stance, held a deep respect for his unwavering dedication and the palpable passion he brought to every issue.”
3AW said Derryn leaves behind a legacy of “uncompromising, compelling broadcasting” and praised him for “fundamentally shaping” the station he “called home for so many years”
Born in New Zealand, Hinch became one of Australia’s best-known radio broadcasters through his work in Sydney and Melbourne
Throughout his career, he also worked as a journalist, actor and politician
He founded the Derryn Hinch Justice Party in 2015 before being elected to the Australian Senate the following year
He served as a senator for three years
