While much of the obesity care industry reports weight loss during treatment, few organizations have published objective data showing what happens after medication use ends

CRANSTON, R.I., Sept. 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Abacus Health Solutions is among the first organizations in the obesity care industry to report objective, long-term weight loss maintenance outcomes. While weight loss results have become increasingly common, long-term maintenance data remains scarce. Most new research is showing that participants and GLP-1 utilizers quickly regain most of the weight after discontinuing GLP-1 medication therapy

Healthy Weight Program vs. GLP-1 Clinical Trial

Through its Healthy Weight Program, Abacus tracked participants for 24 months using connected scales that provide objective weight measurements. Results show participants achieved an average of 21.0% weight loss after 12 months and maintained an average of 18.0% weight loss at 24 months, one year after discontinuing GLP-1 anti-obesity medication

The program was built around decades of research showing that long-term success depends on more than medication alone. Sustainable weight management is driven by consistent behaviors, including regular self-monitoring, physical activity, balanced nutrition, and ongoing engagement. The Healthy Weight Program reinforces these known predictors of success throughout the participant journey, helping members develop habits that support lasting results

As GLP-1 medications continue to reshape obesity treatment, employers and health plans are increasingly asking what happens when treatment ends. While many programs report weight loss achieved during active therapy, few have published objective long-term maintenance outcomes. This lack of evidence has created a significant gap in understanding whether weight loss can be sustained after medication discontinuation and has contributed to the belief that continued GLP-1 use is the only path to long-term weight loss success.

“The obesity care industry has become very good at measuring weight loss during treatment, but far less is known about what happens after treatment ends,” said Dr. David K Ahern. “Long-term maintenance is the concern employers, health plans, and patients care about most. By tracking outcomes for 24 months, we’re providing evidence that sustainable weight loss is possible when medication is combined with behavioral support and a dedicated maintenance strategy.”

These findings represent an important step forward in understanding how individuals can sustain weight loss after active GLP-1 treatment. Through its Healthy Weight and Keep-it-Off® Program, Abacus Health Solutions is addressing a critical evidence gap in obesity care by publishing long-term maintenance outcomes that remain uncommon across the industry. The results demonstrate that meaningful weight loss can be maintained over time through a combination of medication therapy, behavioral support, and a dedicated maintenance phase, providing employers and health plans with valuable insight into achieving lasting health outcomes while managing healthcare costs.
