CAMP GRAYLING, Mich. — Personnel assigned to Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations (AFMAO) demonstrated the Department of the Air Force’s commitment to operational readiness during Exercise Northern Strike 26-2

AFMAO established a simulated expeditionary mortuary environment with several capability-focused workstations, providing participants immersive hands-on training and by deploying the Mobile Embalming Unit (MEU-1), demonstrating an expeditionary mortuary capability in a realistic field environment

Northern Strike, one of the Department of War’s largest reserve component readiness exercises, provides military units the opportunity to train in complex, multi-domain scenarios that strengthen joint interoperability and prepare forces for future operations. For AFMAO, the exercise offered an opportunity to demonstrate that mortuary affairs is an essential combat support capability, ensuring commanders can maintain operational momentum while honoring America’s fallen with dignity, respect, and professionalism.

Designed as a rapidly deployable capability, the MEU-1 enables mortuary affairs professionals to establish preservation and preparation operations in locations where permanent facilities may not exist. The unit provides commanders with increased flexibility to support contingency operations while maintaining the highest standards of dignified care

Throughout the exercise, AFMAO personnel assembled and showcased the MEU-1 while integrating with joint partners in realistic operational scenarios. They practiced equipment setup, environmental control, accountability procedures, communications, logistics coordination, and expeditionary mortuary operations under field conditions

Aside from equipment and AFMAO assets, a key component of the success of the expeditionary mortuary mission lies in the efforts of the Air Force Services (3F1) professionals that serve the mission. Red Horse Silver Flag instructors led several training lanes, teaching participants techniques and procedures used in the mortuary process. These mortuary affairs professionals execute procedures with precision, professionalism, and unwavering attention to detail

“We call AFMAO the gateway between the battlefield and home (for the fallen), but it starts with you.” remarked U.S. Air Force Col. Gregory Long, AFMAO commander. “As the 3F1 community, we’re tasked with many missions. That includes serving future service members as well as promising them that if they have their worst day, they will have someone pick them up and take them home”

These efforts provide the capability to recover, preserve, and account for fallen personnel. AFMAO helps commanders clear the battlefield, preserve operational tempo, and maintain focus on mission accomplishment. Every task performed reflects the organization’s guiding principles of dedication, discipline, and precision

Participation in Northern Strike also strengthens relationships with organizations across the Joint Force, improving interoperability and reinforcing the Department of the Air Force’s focus on integrated deterrence and operational readiness. Working alongside partner organizations ensures mortuary affairs capabilities remain synchronized with broader logistics, medical, transportation, and sustainment operations

“We have a large stake in large-scale combat operations because of our role in fatality management, our role in mortuary affairs and our role in casualty assistance,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Catherine Leahy, an A1 Readiness Functional Area Manager, Headquarters Air Force A1 Readiness and Plans branch. “The only way we can do our job is by exercising together, because ultimately we will be relying on each other in the fight as a joint entity.”

As the Department of the Air Force continues to emphasize readiness for contested environments, AFMAO remains committed to ensuring its Airmen are prepared to respond at a moment’s notice. Through realistic exercises like Northern Strike, the organization validates expeditionary capabilities that preserve accountability, honor the fallen, and enable combat forces to continue their mission

Whether supporting humanitarian operations, contingency response, or large-scale combat operations, AFMAO stands ready to fulfill one of the Nation’s most solemn obligations—providing dignified and honorable care for those who made the ultimate sacrifice while supporting commanders and the Joint Force whenever and wherever needed
