An Arizona State University men’s hockey player collapsed on Thursday morning during an outdoor workout, and was hospitalized as a result of the incident, according to a statement released by the university on Sunday afternoon

At this point in time, the player is still in hospital. Vice president of ASU media relations Chris Fiscus, who composed the statement on the announcement, declined to name the student/athlete due to privacy laws

“The university offers its support for the student-athlete, their family and all of our student-athletes during this difficult time,” Fiscus said in the statement

Tempe Fire Medical Rescue had sent crews to Sun Angel Stadium (which hosts the track & field and cross country programs at ASU) at 8:31 a.m. Mountain Standard Time after receiving a report about an illness related to the heat. According to the fire department, the patient was treated at the location and then transported to a nearby hospital

Fiscus also declined to confirm if the workout was sanctioned by the university’s hockey team, the Arizona State Sun Devils. NCAA rules allow college hockey teams to begin formal activities when classes have started. Arizona State began its fall semester the same day as the hospitalization

An extreme heat warning had been in effect all week in the Phoenix area, with the average temperature that day coming at around 92.5 degrees Fahrenheit (33.6 degrees Celsius), while reaching a high of 106 degrees Fahrenheit (41.1 degrees Celsius). According to Weather Underground’s weather history, it was 82.4 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius) at the time medical was called to the university

The hospitalization comes more than a month before the start of the season for Arizona State’s men’s ice hockey team. They’re set to play a double-header against the Lindenwood Lions in St. Charles, Missouri on October 2nd and 3rd, while their first home game of the season will come a week later with a doubleheader against the Holy Cross Crusaders on October 9th and 10th
