Neb. (WOWT) – Back-to-school season can affect what families eat, and a dietitian with CHI Health says a healthy routine starts with a plan

Ellen Thomsen, a dietitian with CHI Health, said a healthy breakfast sets kids up for success in the school day, improving memory and focus. She added that the meal does not have to be elaborate, and that quick options work well for families on the go

“Maybe like a whole grain granola bar or a nut bar,” she said. “Something drinkable can be super fast. Those can be easy things they can just grab from the fridge.” Thomsen said

Thomsen said the busy pace of back-to-school season can lead families to rely on less healthy snacks or eating out. She recommends families come together when deciding what to eat, making a list of foods they enjoy and what may be missing from their diet

She also said making meals stretch can help cut down on time, especially for families with activities outside of school

“Making a meal plan can be a huge lifesaver,” Thomsen said. “Maybe using a crock pot or a sheet pan meal.”

Thomsen also recommended focusing on whole proteins, whole dairy, fresh fruits and vegetables for kids
