Ga. (WTOC) – Spending too much time outside can quickly turn from outdoor fun into a medical emergency

Savannah firefighters warn that heat exhaustion often starts with seemingly minor symptoms, but ignoring those early signs can quickly escalate into a life-threatening situation

To prevent heat-related illnesses, local emergency responders recommend drinking plenty of water, avoiding sugary beverages and limiting strenuous outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun is at its strongest

Recognizing the symptoms of heat illness as soon as they appear is vital

“If you can see that they’re dealing with too much heat, they may turn red, they may get tired, they may be more fatigued or irritable,” said Memorial Health Doctor Ashley Cheek. “They might say their head hurts or their stomach hurts for no other reason. If it’s moving into heat illness or heatstroke, you’ll see nausea, vomiting and they might look like they’re about to pass out.”

For families trying to keep their children and pets safe, experts recommend using the “seven-second rule” before heading out for a walk. To test the ground, place the back of your hand against the asphalt. If it is too hot to hold there for seven seconds, it is too hot for children’s bare feet and pets’ paws

Officials recommend looking for shaded areas, staying indoors or cooling off at local splash pads to safely beat the summer heat
