As National Allotments Week celebrates the importance of growing spaces across the country, members of Harpers Lane Allotment Society say their plots are about far more than the produce they harvest

The society, which is proud of its strong community spirit and flourishing site, says the allotments provide a vital space where people, food, and plants can grow together while supporting wildlife, well-being, and efforts to tackle climate change

Harpers Lane Allotments hosts two community events each year, including its popular Fruit and Veg Show, which attracted more than 100 entries this year

Plot holders regularly share seeds, surplus produce, and gardening advice, while some members have tended their plots for more than 40 years, passing on invaluable knowledge to newer growers

Lisa Pollitt, member of the Society Committee, said: “We are very proud of Harpers Lane Allotments and extremely lucky to have a fantastic allotment community where people, food and plants grow together. “

“The allotments are a place where nature and habitats are able to continue the fight against climate change and a fantastic space for community, wellbeing and mindfulness

“As a community we support each other with seed sharing, food sharing and growing tips and advice

“Some plot holders have lovingly tended to their plots for over 40 years and the growing advice they are able to share is invaluable

“We are lucky to have plot holders who are passionate gardeners and spend time keeping the allotments tidy and looking the very best they can.”

Society members describe the site as a place of friendship, learning, and sanctuary

One member of the allotment society, Julie, said: “My allotment means the world to me, it came into my life when I most needed it, a gift from heaven

“It is somewhere that makes me smile, where I grew a freezer full of food that has lasted me all winter

“A place to forget about your worries, a quiet place where I get plenty of fresh air and exercise

The allotments also provide an important space for nature to thrive and members speak fondly of watching sunrises accompanied by birdsong and seeing bats emerge at dusk to forage around the site

Tony, another plot holder on the allotment described it as his “reason to live, fertilizer for the soul.”

While others explain how the allotment has become a family affair as children and grandchildren are introduced to the benefits of getting outside and gardening with others

Tony and Sue said: “Our plot means everything to us

“It’s our happy place, our forever learning space and it’s a great opportunity for us to include our grandchildren in the allotment life.”

Bees, birds, and other wildlife flourish alongside the fruit, vegetables, and flowers cultivated by members throughout the year

National Allotments Week highlights the role allotments play in promoting sustainable food growing, healthy lifestyles, and stronger communities

At Harpers Lane, plot holders say those values are on display every day through neighbourly support, shared knowledge, and a collective passion for nurturing both people and nature

Harpers Lane Allotment does not just celebrate gardening, it also provides members with friendship and a sense of well-being
