Carrefour Belgium Steps Up Commitment For Balanced Nutrition

In line with recommendations from the PwC Belgium-led Belgian Food Council for Prevention, Carrefour Belgium is strengthening its commitment to promoting balanced nutrition
As part of its ‘Act for Food’ strategy, the retailer aims to play a proactive role in addressing public health challenges in Belgium, where 49% of the population is overweight and 18% is obese, the company noted
Carrefour is introducing specific aisles stocked with healthier alternatives as it seeks to guide impulse purchases at the checkout
Building on its history as the first Belgian retailer to label added sugars on private-label packaging, Carrefour is expanding its use of the Nutri-Score system both in stores and online

To meet public health expectations, the company is actively removing design elements that appeal to children from the packaging of unhealthy products
Product Reformulation
Carrefour is also reformulating its own-brand products to meet stricter health criteria
Between 2022 and 2025, the retailer eliminated around 155 tonnes of sugar, 27 tonnes of salt, and 180 tonnes of fat across approximately 458 private-label items, data showed
The grocer has banned more than hundred additives that EU regulations still legally permit, and plans to extend this reformulation process through 2030

Carrefour is also investing in nutritional training for its workforce and leveraging digital tools and competitive pricing to make healthier choices more affordable and straightforward option for consumers
Carrefour is collaborating with a broad network of aligned suppliers, including Danone, Nestlé, Barilla, Arla, Spadel, and La Lorraine, among others, to maximise the impact of these initiatives
