S.C. (FOX Carolina) – County officials said the South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) confirmed a case of La Crosse encephalitis (LACE) in an Oconee County resident
Oconee County Emergency Services said the infected resident is from Westminster. This is a single confirmed case, and there is currently no indication of widespread transmission in the county
“La Crosse encephalitis is a rare but serious viral illness spread through the bite of an infected mosquito, most commonly the treehole mosquito,” Oconee County Emergency Services said. “It is not spread person to person. The disease is most often reported in children under 16.”
Officials said they are <a href="https://healthylife7.com/titans-work-out-standout-ufl-safety-sam-kidd/” title=”Titans work out standout UFL safety Sam Kidd”>working to monitor the situation and making preparations for mosquito spraying in a one-mile radius of Old Seneca Road, starting Friday evening
The county issued the following tips for residents:
- Eliminate standing water around the home — the mosquitoes that carry LACE breed in small containers, treeholes, old tires, buckets, and clogged gutters, not in ponds or large bodies of water.
- Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus on children and adults when outdoors.
- Dress protectively — long sleeves and pants during outdoor activity, especially in wooded areas.
- Repair window and door screens to keep mosquitoes out of the home.
- Supervise outdoor activities near wooded or brushy areas where treehole mosquitoes are more active during daylight hours.
