CHRONIC kidney disease (CKD) risk increased after unilateral nephrectomy in patients with advanced age, diabetes mellitus, lower preoperative kidney function, and radical nephrectomy, according to a systematic review and meta-analysis of 26 cohort studies involving 13,321 patients. The findings highlighted several preoperative and surgical factors associated with incident CKD and may help inform risk assessment before surgery.
