Miss. (WLBT) – Pediatricians at TrustCare Kids in Brandon say they have already diagnosed children with COVID, the flu, and strep throat in the first weeks of the new school year

Health professionals say children living with grandparents or older adults face a higher risk for severe illness

TrustCare Kids is urging families to stay up to date with vaccinations as soon as they become available

“Older adults are more vulnerable because they have other chronic medical conditions,” a health professional said. “The best way to keep them protected is to vaccinate — everyone should be vaccinated. The entire household.”

Healthcare professionals say it is best to quarantine a child from older adults living in the home to prevent illnesses from spreading

Pediatricians say something as simple as a cold can affect an older adult on a greater scale

The clinic said it is important to teach children good hygiene steps they can use in the classroom

“Covering your cough, and if you’re having a fever, you should limit your contact with others, because that’s when you’re usually the most contagious,” a health professional said

TrustCare Kids says families should watch for early warning signs of illness

If a guardian notices a fever, cold symptoms, or coughing, they should visit a doctor. Doctors also say if a fever lasts more than five days and a child has shortness of breath, the child should be re-evaluated by their pediatrician
