Elite athletes are increasingly associated with carefully planned diets, personal chefs, and meticulously measured meals. Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, however, had a different idea

The former Cincinnati Bengals star famously made McDonald’s a regular part of his diet during his NFL career, and years after retiring, he has repeatedly pointed to his remarkable durability as evidence that his unconventional approach worked for him

Johnsonplayed 11 seasons and 166 games in the NFLfrom 2001 to 2011, spending the first 10 with the Bengals before finishing his career with the New England Patriots. And Johnson’s numbers do show why he has often been so proud of his durability

Chad Johnson and his unusual McDonald’s diet

Johnson has never hidden his love of fast food. During a 2021 interview at the Sports Illustrated Awards, the former wide receiver argued that his diet had played a role in helping him stay healthy throughout his NFL career

“I want people to realize that playing professional sports … these high-end places that force you to eat what they consider to be healthy, there’s a reason why your bodies are breaking down,” Johnson said at the time

His explanation was even more unconventional

“The body needs to build a callus,”Johnson said. “How do you do that? By eating whatever you want.”

For Johnson, the answer to the question of why he was able to withstand the physical demands of the NFL was simple: McDonald’s. That, of course, is Johnson’s personal theory rather than a scientifically established explanation for his durability. His comments should not be interpreted as evidence that eating fast food prevents injuries. But the numbers behind his claim are certainly striking

How often did Chad Johnson miss games?

Johnson entered the NFL as a second-round pick of the Bengals in 2001 and immediately became one of the franchise’s most important offensive players. Over his 11 seasons, he appeared in 166 regular-season games and started 135of them

    • 2002
    • 2003
    • 2004
    • 2005
    • 2006
    • 2007
    • 2009

Johnson also played 15 games during his only season with the Patriots in 2011. His lowest total came as a rookie, when he appeared in 12 games. In the following decade, he played at least 13 games every season. For a wide receiver who spent much of his career as Cincinnati’s No. 1 option and regularly faced the NFL’s top defensive backs, that was an impressive level of availability

    Ochocinco’s career with the Bengals

Johnson’s durability was only one part of what made him one of the defining players in Bengals history. He spent 10 seasons in Cincinnatiand became one of the NFL’s most productive receivers during the 2000s

From 2002 through 2007, Johnson recordedat least 1,000 receiving yards in six consecutive seasons. His best statistical year came in 2007, when he caught 93 passes for 1,440 yards and eight touchdowns

He finished his NFL career with:

    • 766 receptions
    • 11,059 receiving yards
    • 67 receiving touchdowns
    • 166 games played

Johnson made six Pro Bowlsand was one of the league’s most recognizable players during his prime. And throughout that period, his eating habits became almost as famous as his touchdown celebrations and larger-than-life personality

    “I never got hurt”

Johnson has discussed his McDonald’s-heavy lifestyle on multiple occasions over the years. His basic argument has remained. He believes athletes should not necessarily force themselves into an extremely restrictive diet simply because they play professional sports. In one particularly blunt recollection, Johnson argued that his approach had helped himavoid the injury problems that affected other players

“I never got f***ing hurt,” he said, before explaining his belief that his body had adapted to the food he ate

Whether that theory holds up scientifically is another matter entirely. NFL injuries can be influenced by a huge number of factors, including genetics, training, conditioning, workload, recovery, previous injuries, playing style, and, inevitably, luck

Johnson’s career does not prove that McDonald’s was responsible for his durability. What it does prove is that one of the NFL’s most productive receivers of the 2000smanaged to maintain an extraordinarily unconventional diet while missing relatively little time
