Mich. (WLUC) – A program whose mission is to serve older adults in the Copper Country is continuing to grow
The Copper Shores Meals on Wheels program has announced several new updates. The program provides tens of thousands of quality meals to seniors across the Copper Country every year. And now, the program is reaching places it never has before
“We have officially gone into southern Houghton County with two meet-and-eat locations, located in Twin Lakes and Alston,” Program Director Jessica Mills said. “I am confident that we’re going to continue growing and continue to build on the supports that we already have.”
Mills says the Alston site serves as many as 25 seniors a week, while the Twin Lakes site supports as high as 30. This has been a major goal of the program, especially when Mills became director earlier this year
Due to the program’s location in Hancock, reaching these locations at the other end of the county has been challenging. Mills attributes the passing of the Elder Nutrition Millage last year to this success
“Everything we’ve been able to do so far with our expansion, and what we’re looking at moving forward in the future, is thanks to that millage funding and the community support that we’ve had,” Mills continued
The program will also try to set up meal sites in Sidnaw and Kenton. Mills also notes that the program is set to surpass its previous grant cycle’s meal count
Last cycle, running from October to September, 99,644 meals were served. As of today, 82,000 meals have been served. Copper Shores President and CEO Kevin Store says that this all falls in line with the ‘controlled expansion’ of the program
“We’re trying to make sure we expand in a way that we can manage the increasing capacity and output from our kitchen and staff it appropriately and make sure the staff are trained appropriately,” Store said
Store also says that improvements to the program’s kitchen, equipment and delivery vehicles are also in the works
“We still have a lot of work to do to get this to a full roll-out like we’d like to see,” Store added
The program has also launched an online dashboard for the community to see how far the program has progressed and where it currently stands. You can find the dashboard on the foundation’s Meals on Wheels page
