    Noelle Adams,

OMAHA, Neb. (KLKN) — The Douglas County Health Department (DCHD)  announced the confirmation of a human case of West Nile virus in the county this summer

While the virus was detected in mosquito pools throughout Douglas County this season, this is the first human case

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are 181 confirmed cases of West Nile virus in the U.S., and 30 in Nebraska

“It is important that our community be aware of potential risks in the area, especially with so many enjoying outdoor summer activities,” said Deputy Health Director Dr. Justin Frederick. “We want the community to be safe and protected while enjoying the outdoors.”

West Nile virus often does not provoke symptoms, according to the DCHD. Approximately 1 in 150 develop sever illness. Risks are higher for certain medical conditions or persons 60-years-old and up
