During a mean 10.8 years of follow-up, the researchers found that endometriosis was associated with a higher risk for type 2 diabetes compared with that seen for women with no endometriosis.

HealthDay News — Endometriosis is associated with increased type 2 diabetes risk, according to a study published online Aug. 6 in Diabetologia

Maggie Fuzak Nunziato, Ph.D., from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, and colleagues examined the association between endometriosis and its clinically relevant subtypes with incident type 2 diabetes. The analysis included 2.9 million people identified from the Utah Population Database

During a mean 10.8 years of follow-up, the researchers found that endometriosis was associated with a higher risk for type 2 diabetes compared with that seen for women with no endometriosis (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 1.46). There was variance observed by subtype, with the strongest associations seen for “other site” endometriosis (specified site: aHR, 2.67; unspecified site: aHR, 2.47). For premenopausal women, associations were stronger than for postmenopausal women (aHR, 1.55). Associations were also stronger for those with a body mass index (BMI) <30 kg/m2 versus those in higher BMI categories (aHR, 2.39). Associations persisted regardless of history of gestational diabetes mellitus.

“Associations were strongest among women who are traditionally considered at lower baseline metabolic risk, suggesting that the association between endometriosis and type 2 diabetes may differ across clinically relevant subgroups,” the authors write
