JAKARTA – Healthy eating patterns are not only about the food served at the table, but also the habits and choices that families make every day. Starting from choosing ingredients, determining menus, processing them, to managing food waste, all of which are part of the food habits that are formed at home
The family is an important environment to introduce healthy eating habits from an early age. This role is not only the responsibility of the mother, but also involves the father and child according to their respective roles
In commemoration of National Children’s Day, the Sustainable Food System Coalition (KSPL) together with Buibu Baca Buku (BBB) Book Club held a Family Fun ‘Food’ Day. This activity invites families to understand the importance of healthy eating patterns while getting to know local food through various educational activities
Head of the KSPL Secretariat, Gina Karina, said that this activity was one of the efforts to encourage changes in the food system by involving families
“Why do we make events like this? Because this is one of the efforts to transform the food system that we are trying to do. One of our programs is Food and Family. We believe that every day, for 24 hours, in a week, throughout the year, there are always decisions related to food made in the family,” said Gina at the South Pavilion, Tebet Eco Park on Saturday, July 25, 2026
According to him, every family member has a role in determining the food system at home, ranging from choosing food to managing food waste
“Decisions related to food, whether made by mother or father, including how to process food and manage waste, are all forms of family contributions. We strongly encourage the involvement of all family members. Everyone has their own role in determining the food system in their family,” continued Gina
Gina hopes that this activity will not only be a competition, but also provide a pleasant experience that families can apply in their daily lives
“Competition may be one thing, but no less important is having fun with the family. Hopefully this activity can be a fun time with the family and the learning that is gained today, can be applied at home,” said Gina
Healthy eating patterns can start with simple steps, such as cooking more often at home, increasing local food choices, paying attention to the composition of food in one plate, and gradually reducing the consumption of ultra-processed foods
Gina explained that Indonesia still faces challenges in realizing a healthy, diverse, equitable, and sustainable food system, one of which is the shift in eating patterns that is increasingly away from local food
“Indonesia is still facing various challenges in realizing a healthy, diverse, equitable, and sustainable food system. One of the biggest challenges is the shift in eating patterns that is increasingly away from local food and more towards ultraprocessed food (UPF),” added Gina
Gina said this was reflected in the high level of obesity which in 2023 reached 23.4 percent. Based on the hidden cost research that has been carried out, obesity alone costs the country more than 200 billion US dollars or Rp. 3.6 trillion
“Seeing the urgency, collective action is needed from all lines, including the most important is from the family, where decisions about food are made every day of the week throughout the year,” said Gina
Meanwhile, Meita Eryanti, Partnership and Community Lead BBB Book Club assessed that changing habits can start from the family environment
“Collaborating with KSPL in the Family Fun ‘Food’ Day event, BBB wants to show that climate action does not have to be complicated or far from our daily lives. As a community that believes that mothers are the strongest agents of change in the family, we believe that real food system change starts in the kitchen, from simple choices made every day by a mother and her family,” explained Meita
In the event, 15 families participated in various educational games. Mothers were challenged to prepare menus based on the principle of Isi Piringku, fathers got to know local spices and foods, while children played local food-themed puzzles
Through this activity, families are invited to understand that food diversity and healthy eating patterns can be applied through simple habits at home. The activity was also filled with a Smart and Careful session about local food won by the Garang Asem family group
The head of the Asem Garang Team, Dhenny Ajie, said the activity gave his family a new experience
“Through this event, we understand how important local food is in the daily diet of families. Hopefully in the future, events like this can continue to exist and reach more Indonesian families so that more families are aware of local food. That way, the Indonesian food system will be stronger and not dependent on imported products,” said Dhenny
Building a healthy diet starts at home. By involving all family members in choosing, processing, and enjoying food, good habits can be formed slowly
Families also become agents of change by introducing diverse and nutritious foods, utilizing local food, and teaching children to know healthy foods from an early age
