Finland is transforming its summer travel economy by packaging traditional wood-fired saunas, lake swimming, and digital detox through the Chill Like a Finn campaign, which drew approximately 24,000 international applications by May 2026. Rather than focusing solely on winter Lapland corridors, Visit Finland’s strategic roadmap seeks to leverage eastern Lakeland routes to increase average visitor stays from four to five nights

Mainstreaming Everyday Wellbeing: The Chill Like a Finn Campaign

The travel sector in Finland is experiencing a transition as planners build regional destinations to diversify visitor experiences. In March 2026, Visit Finland launched the international Chill Like a Finn campaign, packaging wood-fired saunas, lake swimming, and screen-free living across the eastern Lakeland

By establishing these seasonal travel corridors, the airline’s management aims to support both business and leisure travel flows. Corporate travelers and travel agencies, which maintain strong relationships with global destination management organizations, benefit from direct seat capacity. This economic integration supports the travel sector, providing service providers with a reliable channel for high-value bookings.

By establishing these seasonal travel corridors, the airline’s management aims to support both business and leisure travel flows. Canadian corporate travelers and travel agencies, which maintain strong relationships with European and Asian destination management organizations, would benefit from direct seat capacity. This economic integration supports the travel sector, providing service providers with a reliable channel for high-value bookings.

The campaign received approximately 24,000 applications by 27 May 2026, primarily from the United States, Türkiye, India, and the United Kingdom

Twelve selected travelers visited eastern Finland in June, exploring regional clusters in Kainuu, North Karelia, North Savo, South Savo, South Karelia, and Kymenlaakso

The Lakeland Savo Route: Packaging Slower Travel

A central part of the wellness strategy is the development of regional road trips, such as the 500-kilometer Savo route

This localized disruption also offers a unique opportunity for duty-free retailers and terminal operators to design services suited for stranded passengers. By monitoring passenger comfort levels during long delays, airport customer teams can provide complimentary amenities to ensure guest satisfaction. This proactive approach helps build traveler confidence, ensuring that regional transit routes remain competitive with global hub standards

The journey starts in the Kuopio-Tahko area, passes through Oravi and Savonlinna, and ends in Mikkeli

The route encourages travelers to fly to Kuopio, rent a car, and return26, involving approximately 2,000 open responses, showed that nearly 70 percent of international visitors identified saunas as a memorable part of their trip, while 7 percent were detractors

Economic Architecture of the Finnish Visitor Economy

The development of wellbeing itineraries is supported by a broader recovery in Finland’s visitor economy

This environmental focus is supported by regional climatologists and conservationists who monitor ecosystem health. By tracking tourist footprint signals, managers can ensure that natural areas remain protected. The integration of carrying-capacity policies with wilderness trails demonstrates how tourism planning can protect biodiversity while offering high-quality educational hikes

This localized culinary focus also offers a unique opportunity for restaurant associations and culinary schools to design programs suited for premium travelers. By monitoring traveler culinary preferences during long stays, local chefs can provide customized dishes to ensure guest satisfaction. This proactive approach helps build traveler confidence, ensuring that Goan coastal dining remains competitive with global culinary standards

In 2025, Finland recorded 5.1 million foreign visits, a 4 percent increase from 2024

Foreign overnight stays reached 7.2 million (up 13 percent year on year, exceeding the 2019 pre-pandemic peak), while visitor spending totaled 3.7 billion EUR. Leisure travel represented 76 percent of international visits, with leisure arrivals increasing by 7 percent and related spending growing by 3 percent

In June 2026, Mainland Finland saw 2.26 million overnight stays (1.71 million domestic, 540,000 foreign), with hotel occupancy at 60 percent and average room rates at 122 EUR. Airport traffic in June 2026 reached 1.9 million passengers (up 5 percent year on year, with 1.6 million on international flights). During the first half of 2026, airports handled 10.6 million passengers, a 6 percent increase. In 2024, preliminary figures showed tourism employing 149,000 people (5.4 percent of the workforce) and contributing 2.5 percent of GDP (up from 2.3 percent in 2023).

Community Support and Sustainable Travel Finland Standards

To manage environmental impacts, the national tourism office has implemented the Sustainable Travel Finland (STF) program

A record 738 companies participated in the STF survey in June 2026. Approximately 41 percent of these businesses actively support biodiversity initiatives. By choosing community-run accommodation and local guides along the Saimaa lake system, visitors support small family businesses and local food production networks in Karelia and Savo

Visitor Guide: Local Specialties, Regional Transit, and Sauna Etiquette

Traveling through Lakeland involves booking trains, renting vehicles, and observing traditional bathing practices

Sample traditional culinary specialties during your stay. Try Karjalanpiirakka, traditional Karelian rye pasties filled with rice porridge and topped with egg butter (munavoi). Savor Kalakukko, a Savonian rye bread pie filled with fish and pork, baked until soft. Enjoy fresh chanterelles and bilberries

Coordinate your local transport. Book VR train tickets from Helsinki to Kuopio, with standard fares ranging from 50 to 90 EUR for the 4.5-hour journey. For local flexibility along the Savo route, rent a car at Kuopio Airport and return it at Mikkeli

Observe traditional sauna rules. Shower thoroughly before entering the hot room. Sit on a small clean towel (pefletti) to protect the wooden benches. While nudity is common and culturally accepted in private or gender-segregated saunas, you may wear a swimsuit in public facilities. Pour water onto the hot stones to create steam (löyly), and cool down with a dip in the lake

Future Outlook: Rebuilding a Resilient Year-Round Wellness Corridor

The long-term development of Finland’s wellness sector depends on integrating transport networks with regional promotion campaigns. The national destination office and regional planning boards are collaborating to build sustainable travel networks

Sustainable initiatives include building low-emission shuttle links, promoting eco-friendly guesthouses, and introducing cultural heritage guides. By combining smart visitor management with traditional agricultural preservation, the region aims to support travel innovation, securing a resilient and connected future for Central Europe’s mountain communities
