Mich. (News 10) – GLP-1 weight loss drugs have grown sharply in popularity in recent years, but health experts are warning users about the challenges that can follow when patients stop taking them

A Gallup poll, released in July, found that in 2024, 6% of people surveyed had used a GLP-1 drug. Two years later, that number nearly tripled to 15%

Sarah Smith, a registered dietitian with University of Michigan Health Sparrow, said patients starting a GLP-1 should also be working with a dietitian

“Because registered dietitians can help teach you and help guide you on building healthy habits for balanced meals and consistent eating patterns and help you build an exercise routine,” Smith said

Smith said that while GLP-1s can offer a quick fix for some people, staying on the drug is not a long-term option for everyone. When patients stop taking the medication, the weight they lost often returns

“Are you going to be able to eat this way five years from now, 10 years from now…We need to make sure we’re practicing consistency — consistent eating patterns and consistent exercise patterns,” Smith said

Susan Celsor, an Okemos resident, said she has not used a GLP-1 but worked with a dietician to build lifelong healthy habits to keep weight off

“So when I travel, my recipes, or my calendar Monday through Sunday, go with me, and that’s what I use. I just got back from Toronto, Canada, and it went with me,” Celsor said

Smith also noted that because GLP-1 medications slow the digestive system, other common side effects can include nausea and vomiting

Alex Thompson, clinical nutrition manager at University of Michigan Health-Sparrow, said weight management is a valid health concern alongside other conditions

“Weight management is an important aspect of all of our health. Although other conditions such as diabetes, hypertension or kidney disease might be concerns for some people, obesity and weight management are certainly just as valid health concerns,” Thompson said

Experts said all patients should talk with their doctor about their specific needs
