Kai Havertz got the ball rolling with our first goal in Saturday’s pre-season win over Girona, and said he ‘feels strong and ready to go’ ahead of the new campaign

We ran out 4-1 winners after a week-long training camp in Spain, with Christos Tzolis, Max Dowman and Gabriel Jesus all joining Havertz on the scoresheet

After the game, Havertz said the team felt good on the pitch, earning a deserved win. “Yeah, I think it was a good win,” he said afterwards. “You saw already the connections we had on the pitch. It was a good test for us against a good team and I think we played strong. We need to continue like that now.”

This was Havertz’s first action since starring for Germany at the World Cup, and he said he is already feeling good, even at this early stage of pre-season.

“Playing games is the best way to get fit and especially for the players. I think they’ve had a long break now. I think it’s important to play a couple of games. I think we’re already looking forward to the next one

“(My fitness levels) are quite good, to be fair. I feel like I had three weeks off. I think I didn’t lose too much and I feel good, feel strong and I’m ready to go.”

Havertz also praised the impact of new signing Tzolis, who he said he was aware of from his time in Germany, and also the multitude of young players in the squad, who he said have impressed with their work rate and quality

He finished by looking ahead to the new season, saying the players are determined to kick on from our title win back in May.

“Now is a new season, new standards and we need to do more to achieve our goals again. Of course, we had a good year last year but we want more trophies to make the fans happy and that’s what we’re here for.”
