Crash diets and punishing workout routines often grab attention, but they are not the only way to lose weight. Kuwar Kapur, who documented his transformation from 142 kg to 80 kg over nearly two years, says his 62 kg weight loss came from following simple habits consistently rather than chasing quick results. Through posts on Instagram, Kapur has shared the routine that helped him stay on track, saying that persistence mattered more than perfection. His journey has struck a chord with many people because the changes he made were practical and easy to stick to. Along with sharing five habits that supported his fat-loss journey, he also explained why gradually increasing physical activity worked better than pushing too hard from the start.

    1. Build every meal around protein

One of the biggest changes Kapur made was increasing his protein intake. Looking back at his old eating habits, he wrote, “I used to eat like a toddler, carbs on carbs on carbs. The moment I built every meal around protein, cravings dropped, hunger stabilised, and late-night kitchen raids disappeared.”According to health experts, protein helps improve satiety and supports muscle maintenance during weight loss when included as part of a balanced diet. The British Dietetic Association also recommends combining lean protein with whole grains, fruits and vegetables for a healthier eating pattern.

    2. Walk for 10 minutes after meals

Instead of depending on expensive supplements, Kapur says one simple habit made a noticeable difference.“Sounds boring. That’s exactly why people ignore it,” he wrote. “A simple 10-minute walk after eating improved my digestion, controlled blood sugar, and worked better than most fat-loss supplements people waste money on.”Research, including findings published by the American Diabetes Association, suggests that light activity after meals may help improve blood sugar control and support overall metabolic health.

    3. Track your progress without fearing the weighing scale

Rather than avoiding the scale, Kapur started weighing himself every day. His focus, however, was never on daily fluctuations.“Most people avoid the scale because emotions get involved. I stopped reacting to the number and started tracking the trend,” he said.He added, “You can’t change what you refuse to measure.”Experts also point out that body weight naturally changes from day to day, making long-term trends more useful than individual readings.

    4. Cut liquid calories first

Kapur believes one of his easiest victories came from eliminating hidden calories in drinks.“I was unknowingly drinking 600+ calories daily. Thick milkshakes, sugary drinks, dozens of sweets, you name it,” he recalled. He added, “No diet change. No crazy workout. Just switching to zero-calorie drinks and artificial sweeteners gave me my easiest fat-loss win ever.”The World Health Organization recommends reducing free sugar intake, especially from sugary drinks, as part of a healthy diet.

    5. Follow a structured meal schedule

The final habit was eating meals at fixed times instead of eating whenever he felt hungry.“Eating based on mood equals overeating. Eating with structure equals results,” Kapur wrote. “Once I fixed meal timing, staying in a calorie deficit stopped feeling like discipline.”According to him, having a routine made healthy eating easier to maintain over time instead of relying on motivation alone.

Why he didn’t start with 10,000 steps

Alongside these habits, Kapur also advised against suddenly jumping into long walks or intense cardio. He wrote, “Most people jump straight to 10K steps then wonder why they are exhausted and sore and quit by week 2.”Instead, he recommends starting with 3,000-5,000 steps a day, or even fewer if needed, and increasing activity gradually as fitness improves. His cardio progression moves from beginner to overweight, fitter, leaning-down and shredded phases, with step counts rising over time. He also suggests lifting weights three to four times a week regardless of the stage.Kapur summed up his journey with a reminder that many people trying to lose weight may relate to. “A little harsh truth? These habits aren’t extreme. They’re necessary. I didn’t lose 60+ kg through motivation. I followed a system.” His story highlights that sustainable weight loss often comes from building habits that can be maintained for the long run rather than relying on short-term fixes.Add ET Logo
