For Novo Nordisk Philippines general manager Wei Sun, health isn’t a race to be won fast. It’s a lifelong partnership built on commitment and understanding
We live in a time of speed and convenience. Everything is instant and frictionless: messaging, banking, entertainment and more. It seems inconceivable today to think of something which takes time and real effort as still worth it. And yet, Novo Nordisk stands by a contrarian concept. For alongside a widespread shift toward wellness since the pandemic, the leading healthcare company is clear about where it stands: that meaningful health outcomes require patience, support and trust. These are needed to drive meaningful change in how societies understand and react to chronic diseases, which it tackles with methods beyond the scientific.

With a century behind it in pharmaceutical research and manufacturing, Novo Nordisk has spent decades working almost exclusively on conditions that need lifelong care. “Living with a chronic disease often carries not only physical challenges but also psychological and social ones,” says Wei Sun, who leads the company’s operations in the Philippines. “By advancing science, improving access to care and advocating for compassionate treatment, we hope to help people feel supported, not defined by their condition.”
Sun adds that wellness in the Philippines is still “often viewed through a lifestyle lens”, where the emphasis is placed on exercise, nutrition, mindfulness or fitness. “Which are all valuable”, she explains, “but many chronic conditions, including obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, are influenced by complex biological, environmental and social factors. Wellness should therefore also include access to evidence-based healthcare, early intervention and compassionate support.”

That shift in understanding is central to Novo Nordisk’s approach. The company believes advancing healthcare means not only pioneering scientific innovation but also changing how society understands chronic diseases. Through education, partnerships and initiatives that encourage evidence-based care, Novo Nordisk is helping move the conversation from stigma to science—an ambition embodied by its Live Lighter movement. Bringing together healthcare professionals, patient advocates, media, partners and policymakers, the initiative calls for a shift in perspective—from viewing obesity as a matter of personal responsibility to recognizing it as a complex, chronic disease influenced by biology, environment and other underlying factors.
“Our contribution begins with helping people live healthier lives through science and innovation. But holistic health also depends on dignity, confidence, inclusion and hope,” remarks Sun. “That’s why Novo Nordisk invests not only in research and development but also in education, advocacy and partnerships that encourage a more compassionate understanding of chronic diseases. When people receive the right support, they are better able to care for their physical health, improve emotional well-being and participate more fully in the lives they value.”

Sun doesn’t deny the many positive ways technology has transformed healthcare—it has made information more accessible and created new opportunities for people to take proactive steps to well-being. These advantages have also given Novo Nordisk Philippines its unique position at the crux of scientific advancement and the conversations that drive change at the granular level
As healthcare continues to evolve, Novo Nordisk’s role extends beyond the medicinal. It seeks to shape an environment where chronic diseases and its associated stigma are better understood, through initiatives like its Live Lighter movement. “The future of healthcare will not be shaped by innovation alone,” Sun emphasises. “It will be defined by how well we combine science, partnership and compassion to help people live healthier lives. At Novo Nordisk Philippines, that is the future we are committed to building.”
