Ill. (Heartland News) – Two new conditions have been added to the list of medical issues that qualify Illinois residents for the state’s Medical Cannabis Patient Program, health officials announced Tuesday
Illinois Department of Public Health(IDPH) Director Dr. Sameer Vohra approved the additions of sickle cell disease and polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) with chronic pain
Under state law, the IDPH director reviews public petition requests to expand the approved list of “debilitating medical conditions” based on scientific analysis and medical literature
“Medical cannabis can provide relief for people living with certain debilitating conditions,” Vohra said. “We look forward to working with our medical providers to ensure safe, appropriate access for individuals struggling with these newly approved conditions,” he added
PMOS, formerly known as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), is a metabolic and hormonal disorder that can cause chronic pain. Sickle cell disease is an inherited group of red blood cell disorders that can cause fatigue, organ damage and episodes of extreme pain
The additions are effective immediately, allowing medical providers to begin certifying patients with either condition for the state program
The new approvals bring the total number of qualifying conditions in Illinois to 58. The full list of eligible conditions can be found on the Illinois Department of Public Health website
