Every Indian woman puts everyone first; these 9 signs say it’s time to choose yourself

She wakes up before anyone else in the house. She makes breakfast, packs the school bag, reminds her husband about his meeting, answers work emails on her phone before she has even had a glass of water, manages the household, shows up fully at the office, comes home, makes dinner, listens to everyone’s problems, and falls into bed at midnight. And then she wakes up the next morning and does it all again. Somewhere in the middle of all of that, she stopped asking herself a very simple question: how am I doing? Not how the family is doing. How is the project going? Not how everyone else is managing.

    How am I doing?

    2/13

    How am I doing?

For millions of Indian women, this question has become almost impossible to ask. We have been raised in a culture that celebrates the woman who sacrifices, who gives endlessly, who puts herself last as an act of love. And somewhere along the way, that belief quietly taught us that taking care of ourselves is something we do only after everything and everyone else is taken care of. The result is a generation of women who are exhausted to their bones and have no idea their body has been trying to tell them something for months.Every year, International Self-Care Day on July 24 is a reminder that self-care is not a luxury. It is not selfish. It is not something you earn by finishing your to-do list. According to psychologist Dr. Rituparna Ghosh, “Self-care is about recognising your own needs and taking intentional steps to protect your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.” Here are the 9 signs that your mind and body are asking you, urgently and clearly, to finally stop and listen.

    3/13

    Constant fatigue even after sleeping

You sleep seven or eight hours and still wake up feeling heavy. This is the exhaustion that no amount of sleep fixes, because it is not physical tiredness. It is the weight of carrying too much for too long, in silence, without rest, without acknowledgement. For Indian women especially, this kind of fatigue is so normalized that many do not even recognize it as a sign anymore. It has simply become the baseline. That is exactly why it deserves attention

    4/13

Headaches and body aches with no clear cause

When stress and emotional load go unaddressed, they do not disappear. They move. They settle into your shoulders, your neck, your lower back, and your head. Women who carry the mental load of the household, which research consistently shows falls disproportionately on women, often carry that load physically too. Those persistent headaches are not random. They are your body’s way of saying something needs to change

    5/13

    Stomach issues and digestive discomfort

The gut and the brain are deeply connected. Chronic stress, anxiety, and emotional depletion show up in the digestive system faster than almost anywhere else. Bloating, nausea, irregular appetite, unexplained stomach discomfort these are not coincidences. They are signals

    6/13

    Changes in appetite

Some women stop eating when they are overwhelmed. Others cannot stop. Both are signs that the body’s natural rhythms have been disrupted by stress. When your relationship with food shifts without an obvious reason, that is worth paying attention to

    7/13

Lack of concentration and mental fog

You read the same message three times and still cannot process it. You forget what you were about to say mid-sentence. You feel incapable of making even small decisions. This mental fog is one of the clearest signs of a mind that has been running at full capacity for too long with no recovery time built in. For working mothers and women juggling multiple roles simultaneously, this is particularly common and particularly dismissed

    8/13

    Feeling overwhelmed by everyday tasks

Tasks that once felt manageable now feel impossible. Replying to a message feels like too much. Planning dinner feels like a mountain. When ordinary responsibilities begin to feel genuinely crushing, your emotional and mental re

    9/13

    Irritability and mood swings

When we are depleted, our patience is the first thing to go. We snap at the people we love most. We cry over small things. We feel emotions that seem disproportionate but are completely real. Indian women are often made to feel guilty about this irritability, as if it is a failure of character or temperament. It is not. It is a symptom of being given too much to carry and too little space to put it down

    10/13

    Avoiding social interactions

When you find yourself dreading the company of even people you love, when socialising feels like an effort you simply cannot make, your mind is asking for rest, not more stimulation. For women who are expected to be the emotional anchor of every gathering, every family function, every social interaction, this withdrawal is often the mind’s only way of protecting itself

    11/13

    Negative thoughts and persistent self-criticism

The inner critic that tells you that you are not doing enough, not being enough, not giving enough. That you are a bad mother, a bad wife, a bad daughter, and a bad employee. That you should be handling everything better than you are. This voice is loudest when we are most depleted. And for Indian women who have grown up with very high standards placed on them from every direction, it can become deafening. This is not the truth about who you are. It is a sign that your emotional reserves are critically low and what you need is gentleness, not more pressure.

    12/13

Small things that make a real difference

Self-care does not require a retreat or a spa day or a weekend away. It requires intention, practiced in small moments every single day. Sleep well, and protect that sleep as something that is not negotiable. Move your body; even a ten-minute walk counts. Eat nourishing food and drink enough water. Journal for five minutes to give your thoughts somewhere to land. Sit in silence without your phone for even a few minutes. Spend time with people who genuinely restore you, not drain you. And make time for something you enjoy, not because it is productive but simply because it brings you joy. These are not grand gestures. They are small, consistent, deliberate acts of kindness toward yourself. And for Indian women who have spent years making those gestures toward everyone else, they can feel almost revolutionary.

    13/13

The permission you have been waiting for

You are allowed to rest. You are allowed to say no. You are allowed to put yourself on the list. Not at the bottom of the list. On it. Because the most important thing any woman can do for the people she loves, for the work she cares about, for the life she is building, is to make sure she herself is okay. Your body has been sending you signals. Your mind has been asking you to slow down. Today, on International Self-Care Day, is as good a day as any to finally listen
