Iowa — A 74-year-old Iowa man with Parkinson’s disease is taking on a 100,000-step challenge at the Outlets of Des Moines in an effort to reach a personal milestone and encourage others living with the condition
Bruce Snethen is the public safety supervisor at the Outlets of Des Moines. Snethen was diagnosed with Parkinson’s seven years ago, but still keeps himself active. In fact, he averages more than 30,000 steps during a typical workday
“The more I move voluntarily, the less I move involuntarily,” Snethen said
On Saturday morning, Snethen started his mission of walking 100,000 steps in a single day. The goal is to raise awareness for Parkinson’s disease. More than 100,000 steps being a personal goal, he sees it as a way to offer hope to others facing Parkinson’s
“There is hope. At this point, there is no cure. There is hope for one,” Snethen said. “There’s research being done on it all the time. I’m helping with some studies with it at the University of Iowa.”
Snethen told KCCI his grandchildren inspire him to keep going. It’s his hope his challenge encourages others with Parkinson’s disease to do the same
