The Maine CDC has reported its fourth confirmed case of Powassan virus this year

Powassan virus is a rare but potentially deadly tick-borne illness

Maine’s first case of the year was reported two months ago in June

The latest case is the 44th reported in the state since 2000

There are currently no vaccines or medications available to prevent Powassan virus

Symptoms can include fever, headache, vomiting, and weakness

Powassan virus can cause severe disease, including inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) or the membranes around the brain and spinal cord (meningitis). Symptoms of severe disease include confusion, loss of coordination, difficulty speaking, and seizures

According to the CDC, approximately one out of 10 people with severe disease die. Approximately half of the people who survive severe disease have long-term health problems. These can include recurring headaches, loss of muscle mass and strength, or memory problems

Anyone can develop severe illness, but the CDC says older adults, children, and people with weakened immune systems are at the highest risk
