Many social media users pointed out that India has more affordable healthcare and services than in the US

Does earning Rs 40 lakh a year in India offer the same quality of life as making $190,000 in the United States? A debate comparing salaries in both countries and purchasing power has gone viral on social media, with an individual arguing that despite India’s lower cost of living, an American salary gives one greater purchasing power than making Rs 40 lakh per annum in India

The discussion began after an individual named Suraj Kumar Talreja posted on X, “If you are earning 40 LPA every year in India, you are literally living the same lifestyle as someone who is in the USA earning 192,000 USD every year.” The person further urged people to “stop doing nonsense on Twitter about taxes you are paying.”

The claim quickly drew the attention of a man, who argued that such comparisons ignore the differences in purchasing power and the cost of major assets in both countries. “If you have never lived in the U.S., you should not make such stupid comments,” Naveen Negi wrote, before comparing housing and car prices in the two countries

“Just for the record, if you make 190k in the U.S., you can easily buy a 3BHK condominium for about 300K even in a city like Austin even today. You can buy a BMW 3 Series base model for about 50k USD, which works out to 1/4th of 190K,” he mentioned

However, Negi argued that even doubling the Indian salary to Rs 80 lakh annually would not be enough to comfortably buy a two-bedroom apartment in many Tier-1 cities. “With an income of 40 lakhs in India, if you were to 2x the capital and say pay 80 lakhs, you won’t get even a 2bhk in any of the Tier 1 cities in India. A BMW 3 lands at 80 lakhs or more in India, which is 2X the annual comp.,” he explained

His comparison extended beyond housing and vehicles. Negi added, “I have not even mentioned lower interest rates, cheaper lease terms and ability to transfer credit card balance to another card and many such aspects which increase the purchasing power substantially in the U.S. By the way, public schooling is of very high quality and almost free in the U.S.”

“Services Are More Expensive In The USA”

Their exchange quickly gained significant traction online, with users offering a wide range of opinions on the topic

“In Bangalore, a 3BHK costs no less than 2 cr in a decent society, which means you save 10L per annum (reasonable for a family due to cost of living), you have to pay for 20 years without any interest,” wrote a user

“In Hyderabad outskirts like Kompally, Villas are starting at 12Cr. Salaries are not increasing. Real Estate is beyond reach for the majority. If one has money, I would suggest that money be spent in the USA rather than in India. 2 km after your villa community, you will see only trash,” said another

Meanwhile, a person quipped, “Your agreement cherry-picks pricing inequalities in the country. Can you afford a full-time househelp at $1.9L/year? Services are more expensive in the USA.”

If you have never lived in the U.S. you should not make such stupid comments . Just for the record if you make 190k in the U.S. you can easily buy a 3BHK condominium for about 300K even in a city like Austin even today . “But India has affordable health care, and access to maids and helpers, which are very affordable. Yes, the house and car thing is true, but if you have money in india there is luxury for you,” commented someone else

A different individual explained, “In India, the cost of a visit to a dentist, doctor, etc is $5. In the USA, a doctor visit minus insurance is $100-150. The cost of domestic help, food & groceries delivery is way cheaper in India. With 40 LPA, you can have a very comfortable life in India that $200k in the USA can’t give you.”
