A U.S. Marine recruit died after suffering a medical emergency during a physical fitness test at USMC Base Camp Pendleton, the military announced Thursday
The recruit, who was not identified pending family notification, suffered some type of health issue last Saturday and died at Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside on Wednesday, the U.S. Marine Corps Recruiting Depot said

Specifics on the activity the recruit was participating in or the type of medical emergency suffered were not disclosed
“The matter is currently under investigation, and officials are conducting a medical review, both in accordance with standard procedure,” a statement from the MCRD said
Recruits go through four phases of training over 13 weeks, which culminate in a 54-hour final test. According to the USMC training website, during the test, recruits “face food and sleep deprivation, complete 45 miles of marching, and tackle a series of physical and mental challenges. It’s the ultimate test of what they’ve learned—and it’s where they earn the title United States Marine.”
It is unclear what phase of the process the recruit was in at the time of their death
