Dan Miller served as Methodist Healthcare’s CEO for three years. Adrian Garcia/Methodist Healthcare

In the midst of its largest expansion in 30 years, Methodist Healthcare has lost its CEO

Dan Miller, who was appointed president of San Antonio’s largest healthcare system in 2023, is moving on to become president of HCA Healthcare’s East Florida Division. HCA jointly owns Methodist with local nonprofit Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas Inc

“Serving Methodist Healthcare for the past eight years has been an incredible privilege,” Miller said in a statement. “I’m deeply grateful for the colleagues, physicians and caregivers I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside and for the compassion and commitment they bring to our patients, our communities and each other every day. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together and the lasting impact we’ve made across South Texas. This is a truly special place, and it has been an honor to be part of it.”

A spokesperson for the hospital system said Methodist “is well-positioned for continued success” and has begun the search for its next president and CEO

In East Florida, Miller will oversee HCA’s 14 hospitals, 12 freestanding emergency rooms, 65 urgent care clinics and more than 100 physician practices

“Dan is an accomplished healthcare leader who has demonstrated an ability to build strong teams, expand access to care and deliver exceptional results,” said Richard Hammett, president of HCA Healthcare Atlantic Group. “His experience leading complex healthcare organizations and his commitment to physicians, colleagues and patients make him an excellent choice to lead our East Florida Division. We look forward to the impact he will have as we continue to grow and serve communities across South Florida.”

During his time at Methodist, Miller was instrumental in the health system’s expansion. He managed the system’s 11 hospitals and 10 freestanding emergency departments that serve more than 2.6 million inpatients and outpatients annually

In 2023, the health system expanded into the Hill Country, purchasing Fredericksburg-based Hill Country Memorial, rebranding it as Methodist Hospital Hill Country. Later that year, it reopened Forest Park Medical Center as Methodist Hospital | Landmark in Northwest San Antonio, and invested $3.45 million to expand its emergency department in 2025

In October 2024, Methodist acquired another rehabilitation hospital on the Northwest Side of town, rebranding it Methodist Rehabilitation Hospital | Texsan. The next month, the healthcare provider opened its Westover Hills hospital, a 180,000-square-foot, 54-bed acute care facility on the West Side of San Antonio

The health system also has committed at least $450 million to improve existing assets, the biggest such reinvestment it’s made

Last year, Methodist embarked on a $200 million upgrade of its downtown hospital to keep up with growing demand. Additionally, it’s spending $104 million to add 54 beds at its Stone Oak hospital. It also is investing $146 million to add 78 rooms at its Northeast Side hospital and to renovate the kitchen and cafeteria

In 2025, Methodist’s board of directors approved $525 million in capital for its upcoming developments, which include a new comprehensive medical campus on the South Side of San Antonio, as well as one on the West Side.

Alongside its infrastructure expansion, Miller helped the system ramp up staffing to keep up with patient demand. In 2024, Methodist launched a graduate medical education program, focused on training resident physicians to address workforce shortages in South Texas. With 13,500 employees, the system is the second-largest private employer in San Antonio

Before he took over as president of the entire health system, Miller was CEO of San Antonio’s Methodist Hospital and Methodist Children’s Hospital. He has more than 20 years of healthcare leadership experience, previously serving as CEO of the Medical Center of Aurora in Colorado and CEO of Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colo., both of which are part of HCA’s network of hospitals
