Pennsylvania is considering proposed statewide standards that could bring a stronger focus on <a href="https://healthylife7.com/the-lindsay-clancy-trial-brings-maternal-mental-health-into-the-spotlight/” title=”The Lindsay Clancy trial brings maternal mental health into the spotlight”>mental health and well-being into health and physical education classes, including at Pittsburgh-area schools

The proposal comes from the Pennsylvania State Board of Education’s Academic Standards and Chapter 4 Committee. In late 2024, the committee asked the Pennsylvania Department of Education to work with educators and other experts to review the existing standards and develop recommendations for possible changes. The result is a draft update to 22 Pa. Code Chapter 4, the regulation governing academic standards and assessment in the state’s public schools

The draft would emphasize whole-child wellness, health literacy and physical literacy. Along with fitness and movement, students would learn skills tied to mental-health awareness, healthy relationships, communication, decision-making, goal-setting, advocacy and finding appropriate help

For Pittsburgh Public Schools and other local districts, adoption could mean reviewing health and PE curricula to ensure they meet the updated standards. The proposal would not require a stand-alone mental-health course or make PE teachers responsible for therapy. Districts would retain control over their lessons, materials and implementation

The standards remain under review and are not yet required. Supporters say the revisions recognize that students’ physical, social and emotional health are connected
