DES MOINES, Iowa —
Polk County reported the first case of measles in Iowa on July 8 and posted a list of potential places of exposure. July 5 marked the last day of community-based exposure
After 21 days, starting July 26, the worry of that case causing an outbreak is over

“There’s no longer a risk that people are going to suddenly start developing those symptoms because they’re far enough out of that window,” said Juliann Van Liew, Polk County Health Department Director
Van Liew said the community played a significant role in this result, from doing things like filling out surveys, checking in with symptoms, and even postponing some church services
She also credits a strong and quick public health response in Polk County, especially from disease investigators, nurses, the communicable disease supervisor, and emergency preparedness workers
“We were able to get a number of vulnerable folks post-exposure prophylaxis,” she said. “That’s when, after somebody may have been exposed to something, they can actually take meds afterwards and make sure that they don’t develop that.”
This was a breakthrough case. The person diagnosed was double vaccinated
“But it was probably very helpful in this case because they probably had a much lower viral load,” said Van Liew. This reduces the risk of spreading infection to another person
Growing case numbers of this contagious disease remain a problem nationwide. The CDC reports 2,318 cases in 2026 in the U.S. as of July 23. This is already higher than the total number of cases in 2025, which was 2,289. In both years, a reported 93% of people infected were unvaccinated or had an unknown vaccination status
Measles is an airborne disease. It can spread when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or even just breathes. TheCDC still recommends MMR vaccines as the best form of prevention
