“Maxxing” trends are growing in popularity on social media, but experts say many of these health hacks can be ineffective or even pose health risks. Olga Rolenko · Moment
    • “Maxxing” trends aim to optimize specific aspects of health, with popular examples including proteinmaxxing, fibermaxxing, sleepmaxxing, and fertilitymaxxing.
    • Some “maxxing” trends may encourage healthy habits, but taking them too far or following practices that aren’t backed by evidence may pose health risks.
    • Experts recommend focusing on balanced, evidence-based approaches to nutrition, sleep, and fertility rather than trying to “maxx” your health.

“Maxxing” trends have become a popular way to pursue better health on social media

The term generally refers to the practice of maximizing or optimizing a specific aspect of your health or appearance. While some “maxxing” trends are rooted in healthy habits, others encourage people to take those habits to extremes or try practices that aren’t supported by evidence

So, can “maxxing” actually improve your health, or could some of these trends do more harm than good?

Here’s what experts want you to know about four popular forms of “maxxing” related to nutrition, sleep, and fertility, including their potential benefits and risks

Proteinmaxxing and fibermaxxing: Can you get too much?

Proteinmaxxing and fibermaxxing encourage people to boost their intake of protein and fiber in an effort to improve their health

Both are essential nutrients, but experts say getting more isn’t always better

“The goal isn’t to eat the most protein or fiber; it’s to eat the right amount for your unique needs based on your age, gender, physical activity, medical history, labs, etc,” Michelle Routhenstein, preventive cardiology dietitian at Entirely Nourished, told Healthline

    Potential benefits

Increasing fiber intake can support gut health, improve mood
    , and aid weight loss

The most recent Dietary Guidelines for Americans also encourage people to prioritize both fiber and protein in their daily diets

Routhenstein said that focusing on fiber and protein may encourage people to prioritize nutrient-dense foods that support their cardiometabolic health

    Potential risks

Consuming large amounts of fiber can lead to gas, bloating, constipation, or diarrhea, particularly if you increase your intake too quickly

When people experience these symptoms, they may believe they “can’t tolerate fiber” and eliminate it from their diet altogether. However, Routhenstein said fiber may simply need to be introduced more gradually and adjusted to suit individual digestive tolerance

Focusing too heavily on protein can also crowd out other nutrient-rich foods, making it harder to get enough fiber, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, and carbohydrates

Very high protein intakes can also increase fluid needs and may contribute to dehydration and constipation if fiber and hydration are inadequate

“Start slowly, focus on adding protein and fiber one meal at a time, then adjust over time,” Routhenstein told Healthline

Sleepmaxxing: Can trying to optimize sleep backfire?

“Sleepmaxxing” involves using a range of products, practices, and routines in an effort to optimize sleep. These can include rigid sleep schedules, blackout curtains, mouth taping, supplements, and wearable sleep trackers

Adam Mednick, MD, PhD, board certified neurologist and author of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus: From Diagnosis to Treatment, told Healthline that individual sleep needs vary based on factors such as age

“The right amount of sleep is the one that leaves you alert and functioning during the day. Chasing a particular number should not be a health goal,” he said

    Potential benefits

Getting enough quality sleep is essential to overall health and emotional well-being, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Mednick said one potential benefit of sleepmaxxing is that it may encourage people to take their sleep more seriously and focus on improving their overall sleep hygiene

    Potential risks

Some sleepmaxxing practices may be unnecessary or even carry health risks

Wearable sleep trackers, for example, estimate sleep stages based on movement and pulse rate, and a single night’s deep sleep score may be unreliable

People who feel well-rested yet receive a poor sleep score can become anxious about their sleep, potentially worsening it. This pattern is known as orthosomnia

Other practices can pose more serious risks. Mouth taping, for example, can be unsafe for people with undiagnosed sleep apnea or nasal obstruction

“The bigger problem is that sleepmaxxing treats insomnia and sleep apnea as superficial problems to be solved with an app,” said Mednick

“Loud snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing, daytime sleepiness, or ongoing trouble sleeping need medical evaluation, not another gadget.”

Fertilitymaxxing: Can social media hacks really improve male fertility?

“Fertilitymaxxing,” also called “spermmaxxing,” is a trend focused on improving male fertility and reproductive health

Some of the practices promoted as part of the trend include eating raw garlic, giving the testicles ice baths, and testicle tanning. However, experts say these approaches may be ineffective or, in some cases, potentially harmful

Philip Werthman, MD, board certified urologist, men’s health specialist, and director of the Center for Male Reproductive Medicine and Vasectomy Reversal in Los Angeles, CA, told Healthline that the trend presents an opportunity to redirect the conversation from gimmicks toward evidence-based strategies that may actually improve fertility

    Potential benefits

One potential benefit of fertilitymaxxing is that it may encourage men to pay closer attention to their reproductive health

“What concerns me more is why these trends are gaining traction. Male fertility has historically been overlooked in mainstream medicine, leaving a gap that social media has stepped in to fill,” Werthman told Healthline

“When men don’t feel seen or educated within healthcare, they turn to influencers for answers. That’s a failure on our part as a medical community.”

“If we reframe ‘fertilitymaxing’ around science instead of social media trends, it becomes a powerful concept,” Werthman added

“Male fertility is not fixed, and it’s not something to ignore until there’s a problem. It’s a dynamic reflection of overall health and one that men have far more control over than they realize.”

    Potential risks

Some fertilitymaxxing practices promoted on social media aren’t supported by evidence. Eating raw garlic or giving your testicles ice baths, for example, will not meaningfully improve fertility

Other practices may carry health risks. Testicle tanning may reduce sperm count and could potentially cause other health problems

Rather than relying on social media hacks, people concerned about their fertility should speak with a healthcare professional about evidence-based ways to support their reproductive health
