A Richmond animal society is warning cat owners of a viral disease affecting cats in Metro Vancouver
Feline panleukopenia, also called feline distemper, is a “highly contagious and often fatal” disease that is especially dangerous to young and unvaccinated cats, according to Regional Animal Protection Society (RAPS)
The society said there have been cases detected across B.C. and is warning cat owners to be aware of arising symptoms
This virus can cause lethargy, loss of appetite, fever, vomiting, dehydration, and in some cases, diarrhea or sudden death
Acute illness generally lasts no more than five to seven days, but RAPS highlights young kittens are especially at high risk of this disease
According to RAPS, the virus can persist in the environment for up to a year if surfaces are not properly cleaned and treated with effective parvovirus-killing disinfectant
“This is one of the most heartbreaking diseases anyone working in cat rescue can encounter,” said Eyal Lichtmann, CEO of RAPS
“Kittens can appear healthy and then deteriorate with frightening speed. Pet guardians are urged to contact their veterinarian to ensure unvaccinated kittens are safe.”
No medication can directly eliminate the virus and treatment may require hospitalization, IVs and medication to control vomiting
In some cases, antibiotics will be needed for secondary infection and intensive monitoring and nutrition support, RAPS added
“Even with aggressive care, survival is not assured,” said RAPS in a press release
Cat owners are encouraged to have their furry family members get vaccinated as it is the “most effective protection” against feline panleukopenia
Those with a kitten or cat developing any of the symptoms related to feline panleukopenia are encouraged to contact a veterinarian immediately
