Saudi NIH and Sanofi Partner to Advance Health Research and Innovation

The Saudi National Institute of Health (SNIH) and Sanofi have formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that lays out a strategic framework for potential collaboration in health research, innovation, and scientific capacity building, in line with Saudi Arabia’s push to elevate its standing in regional and global health research

Laying groundwork for globally competitive Saudi health research

The agreement merges SNIH’s national role in health research with Sanofi’s global scientific and clinical development know-how, aiming to assess how research knowledge, capabilities, and R&D efforts can be expanded within the Kingdom

In alignment with Saudi Vision 2030, the Health Sector Transformation Program, and the National Biotechnology Strategy, this partnership is designed to reinforce the underpinnings of high-caliber research, covering national research infrastructure, readiness for clinical trials, research governance, and the cultivation of Saudi expertise in science, clinical practice, and research. It also offers a venue for systematic sharing of scientific and technical insights, methodologies, and global best practices to support the Kingdom’s evolving research landscape.

Broadening the Kingdom’s scientific scope from genomics to AI

Possible collaboration areas span research and innovation in domains with significant national disease burden and unmet medical needs, including genomics and precision medicine tailored to the Saudi population. The partners may also look into digital health, artificial intelligence, machine learning, advanced analytics, digital biomarkers, and real-world evidence, with any initiatives involving national health or genomic data requiring separate binding agreements and clearance from relevant Saudi authorities.

Capability enhancement is another key focus, with potential joint efforts in research methodology, clinical trial execution, regulatory science, bioethics, genomic medicine, bioinformatics, and health data science. Through this framework, the entities intend to foster sustainable local research expertise and boost collaboration among national bodies, academia, healthcare providers, and the innovative biopharmaceutical sector

The Chief Executive Officer of Saudi NIH stated that this framework underscores the institute’s dedication to nurturing a national research ecosystem that is both globally integrated and locally anchored. The CEO highlighted that advancing the Kingdom’s health research capabilities—from clinical trial preparedness and research priority-setting to precision medicine, data-driven science, and medical innovation—is fundamental to the mandate under Saudi Vision 2030 and the National Biotechnology Strategy. The partnership with Sanofi offers a valuable avenue for scientific knowledge exchange and for empowering Saudi scientific and clinical talent, enabling more world-class health research to be initiated, executed, and translated into improved health outcomes within the Kingdom.

The General Manager for General Medicines in Saudi Arabia and Gulf Countries at Sanofi remarked that Saudi Arabia is shifting from a role of participation in global health research to one where globally relevant science can originate. The manager noted that this shift demands more than investment; it requires scientific talent, robust research capabilities, and an ecosystem capable of converting discoveries into tangible impact. The collaboration with SNIH mirrors Sanofi’s commitment to that vision, combining the company’s global scientific expertise with Saudi capabilities so that more research can be initiated, led, and generated in the Kingdom, potentially enhancing health outcomes locally and contributing to global scientific advancement.

SNIH serves as the Kingdom’s national body tasked with leading, coordinating, and advancing health research. It establishes and oversees national research priorities, builds research capabilities, governance, and infrastructure, and facilitates the translation of scientific evidence into better health outcomes, clinical practices, and health policy. This mandate supports the Kingdom’s goal of strengthening national scientific capabilities and promoting health research and innovation in accordance with Saudi Vision 2030 and national R&D priorities.

Sanofi is a research-driven, AI-enabled biopharmaceutical company dedicated to enhancing people’s lives and achieving sustainable growth. The company leverages its deep knowledge of the immune system to develop medicines and vaccines that treat and protect millions globally, with a pipeline that could benefit many more. Sanofi is traded on EURONEXT under the ticker SAN and on NASDAQ under SNY
