Australian fitness clubs are set to benefit from a new global initiative from Spartan’s DEKA, with the launch of Gym vs Gym – a worldwide competition designed specifically for DEKA affiliate gyms
Announced by DEKA this month, the inaugural Gym vs Gym World Challenge will take place from 2nd to 4th October 2026, with participating affiliate gyms around the world hosting the same DEKA MILE course over the same weekend. Rather than travelling to a central event, athletes will compete at their local affiliate gym while contributing to their club’s position on a global leaderboard
The initiative provides Australian DEKA affiliate gyms with an opportunity to engage members in an international competition while showcasing their community on a global stage
Community Over Individual PerformanceUnlike traditional fitness racing events that recognise individual performances, Gym vs Gym has been designed to reward collective participation. Results will be calculated using the average DEKA Marks achieved across Age Group and Team categories, encouraging broad member involvement rather than relying on a handful of elite competitors
As Vice President at DEKA International, said the concept reflects the important role that gyms play in building fitness communities
leRoux noted “Great gyms aren’t built around one exceptional athlete – they’re built around communities. Gym vs Gym celebrates exactly that. It’s an opportunity for coaches, members and local communities to work towards one shared goal while seeing how they compare with gyms around the world. We wanted to create something that every affiliate could be proud to host, whether they’re introducing someone to fitness for the first time or supporting experienced racers.”
Opportunity for Australian OperatorsAustralia already hosts DEKA FIT, DEKA MILE and DEKA STRONG events, with an increasing number of affiliate gyms incorporating DEKA into their programming. The Gym vs Gym format extends that model by enabling clubs to run a synchronised international event from their own facilities
According to DEKA, every participating affiliate gym will host the identical DEKA MILE course, with performances contributing to leaderboards tracking results by gym, country, region and individual athlete. Athletes compete over ten functional fitness zones linked by 160-metre running intervals, creating a standardised format that can be replicated consistently across participating venues worldwide
The competition also allows gyms to run multiple heats across the three-day event, with both individual age-group competitors and two-person teams contributing towards their gym’s overall score. Non-members are also eligible to participate, providing affiliate clubs with an opportunity to introduce new participants to their facilities
Building Local Communities through Global CompetitionYancy Culp, Co-Creator and Senior Director of DEKA, told Fitt Insider the initiative is intended to strengthen the connection between gyms and their local communities
“This isn’t about replacing existing competitions. It’s about giving gyms something they can own together. The energy that comes from an entire community training towards one weekend, welcoming new faces through the doors and representing their gym on a global stage is incredibly powerful. That’s what community fitness should look like.”
Affiliate gyms that meet the minimum participation threshold will compete for two global awards – Fastest Gym and Highest Participation – with winners receiving the Golden RAM Trophy. Every participant will also receive an official DEKA Mark, finisher medal and event T-shirt, with performances permanently recorded on the worldwide leaderboard
