Some handmade animal-based costumes got a traveler into trouble at the Arizona-Mexico border last month

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), someone was referred to a secondary inspection at the Port of Nogales after the person said they had agricultural items on July 15

Chicken feet and unknown bird feathers in a bag of costumes led CBP to deny a traveler entry into Arizona, officials say.(U.S. Customs and Border Protection)

During the examination, agriculture specialists said they found a large bag full of costumes that were made of chicken feet and unknown bird feathers

CBP said the costumes could spread animal disease in the U.S., so the agricultural specialist stopped the person from entering Arizona and they returned to Mexico to get rid of the costumes

“CBP agriculture specialists work diligently at all ports of entry to protect U.S. agriculture and natural reism,” said Tucson Director of Field Operations Roque Caza. “Many agricultural products are prohibited from entry because they can harbor diseases that threaten our nation’s food supply and environment.”

CBP reminded travelers that they must declare all agricultural items when arriving at the border. Some of the banned or restricted items include:

    • Meats and animal products
    • Fresh fruits and vegetables
    • Plants, seeds and soil
    • Products made from restricted animal or plant materials

If travelers don’t, they could get penalized. For more information, click or tap here
