I have lived my entire life in Southeast Michigan, and until the summer of 2023, wildfire smoke was not something we regularly experienced here. Today, Michigan is experiencing one of the worst air quality days in its history.

As wildfire smoke continues to render air unhealthy throughout Michigan and beyond, many local organizations in Midland are canceling events or pivoting to help people avoid being outside in the smoky air

Heavy smoke from wildfires blazing in Canada and Minnesota is engulfing large swaths of the Midwest and Northeast U.S. this week, impacting air quality as millions of people are exposed to hazardous levels of air pollution.

Mich. (News 10) – Veterinarians say wildfire smoke can trigger asthma-like symptoms in dogs, cats, and other animals. Pets that are at high risk are those with underlying health conditions or those that spend significant time outdoors

Starting on July 14, smoke from Canadian wildfires drifted into the Upper Valley and across much of the Eastern United States, turning the sky visibly yellow in Hanover on July 14 and 15. On July 16, the air smelled of smoke. Some students who exercise outdoors said the air quality worried them.
