A teen who was born with a very rare condition that left him with a malformed torso he used to try to hide as it affected his confidence and sparked bullying has refused to let it limit him – now aiming to be a firefighter
And he is hoping to inspire others to overcome challenges along the way
Cameron Clayton was born with Poland syndrome, a rare congenital condition that affects the development of the chest muscle. As a result he is missing the whole of his left pectoral major
The 16-year-old, who has just completed his GCSEs at Penair School in Truro and will move to Truro College in September with a view to studying public service in the hope of becoming a firefighter, said the condition led to some bullying at his previous school in Newquay
He said that at Penair he managed to hide the condition the whole time until the last day of school and no-one was any the wiser
“Growing up, it had a significant impact on my confidence, particularly when it came to body image,” Cameron said
The condition means that while his body has adapted and he can still lift things and do push-ups like anyone else, it restricts working out on his left side
“At Penair I’d just wear my PE shirt under my school shirt so I wouldn’t have to change in front of others,” he said. “It was the way it looked.”
Cameron said that rather than letting it define him, he turned to fitness. He is now a regular at his gym in Cubert and he has spent the past seven months training, adapting exercises to suit his body, and documenting his progress to encourage others who have physical differences or disabilities not to give up on their goals
He said: “Through my fitness content, I hope to show that you don’t need a ‘perfect’ body to become stronger or feel confident. If sharing my journey helps even one person feel more comfortable in their own skin, it’s worth it.”
Cameron has been sharing his journey on TikTok at @Cameronc2309
When looking at the nine months that separate the two pictures of himself which he sent us, at the beginning of his gym journey and now, Cameron is rightfully proud of his achievement
“I did it all on my own. I went because of the way I looked but I now go because I love it. It’s become a lifestyle,” he said
