Only a few weeks after the Detroit Lionsreleased Terrion Arnold due to his legal troubles, the 23-year-old defender is on the verge of making his NFL comeback
Arnold’s NFL future looked bleak after he was arrested and charged with kidnapping and robbery in Florida on June 24. His bond was set for $1 million for four charges of kidnapping and four charges of armed robbery, and he is subject to home confinement with the exception of work and legal appointments, per ESPN’s Xuan Thai
This has allowed Arnold to work out with interested teams as he awaits trial. Arnold’s agent told the court that there are already four teams that have inquired about Arnold: the New York Jets, Seattle Seahawks, Houston Texans, and the Indianapolis Colts. In fact, he already worked out with the Texans on Thursday and reportedly has another visit scheduled with a different team next week, per Dave Birkett of The Detroit Free Press
To allow Arnold to continue visiting and working out with teams, the judge ruled against the need to wear a GPS tracker
Despite multiple NFL suitors, Terrion Arnold’s future remains uncertain
Despite Houston’s interest in Arnold, the Texans are in no rush to sign the cornerback. Team insider Jonathan Alexander reported that the Texans are doing their due diligence and are “looking into his legal situation”. He quoted a team
Interestingly enough, Arnold’s agent told the court that she thinks there is “a very good likelihood” that Arnold will sign a new contract in the next 45 days. She then denied that there is a verbal or written agreement with any team
Perhaps a new contract is not imminent, but even the fact that there are already this many suitors for Arnold’s services suggests that he will come back to the league sooner rather than later
The Lions had released Arnold five days after the news of his arrest. He cleared waivers last week and is now free to sign with any team he wants
Arnold is currently under house arrest and is only allowed to leave Florida for work. What this will look like if and when Arnold signs a new contract remains to be seen. Plus, there is the risk of the NFL stepping in
Even if a team is willing to take the risk and sign him, the league always has the discretion to put him on the commissioner’s exempt list. This is essentially a paid leave for players that serves as a disciplinary measure from the league. So, it’s not clear as of right now that Arnold would be able to partake in preseason or suit up in Week 1 regardless of whether he is on a new team
