Nutrition Investigation – Connecting the cause of death Can be studied, such as analysis of associationProvided to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, researchers
There is a way to study in various ways by linking two public data important to public health. These are studies that will be the beginning of personalized “precision medical care” such as analysis of the relationship between individual health behavior, nutrition and disease, and the relationship between death
As a result of analyzing the National Health and Nutrition Survey and statistics on the cause of death, neoplasm (cancer) was selected as the number one cause of death in Korea. Three out of 10 deaths were found to have lost their lives to cancer
On the 10th, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the results of the “National Health and Nutrition Survey-Statistics Linked to Death Causes.” The National Health and Nutrition Survey is a state-approved statistic conducted to understand the health behavior, nutrition, and chronic disease level of the Korean people. This linked data was constructed by linking the raw data of the 2007-2021 National Health and Nutrition Survey with statistics on the cause of death from 2007-2024 by the National Data Agency.
Among the participants in the National Health and Nutrition Survey, 89,560 adults aged 19 or older who agreed to link statistics on the cause of death. Of these, 87,432 people were successfully linked, showing a 97.6% connection rate. The data also included data on 7,955 people who had already died. Among the 37,933 subjects, 4,361 were dead for men and 3,594 out of 49,499 subjects for women

Cancer ranked first with 2,355 people (29.6%) as a result of analyzing the cause of death. This was followed by 1645 patients with circulatory diseases (20.7%) and 1018 patients with respiratory diseases (12.8%). There were 762 (9.6%) abnormal findings of unclassified symptoms and signs and clinical and examination, and 617 (7.8%) externalities of disease and death
In addition, specific infectious and parasitic diseases (334 patients), neurological diseases (321 patients), digestive diseases (278 patients), endocrine nutritional and metabolic diseases (274 patients), and urogenital diseases (201 patients) were also cited as causes
If you want to use related data for research, you can apply at the National Health and Nutrition Survey website. Data are provided through research deliberation by the Health and Nutrition Research Analysis Division of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Microdata Integration Service (MDIS). Researchers can use the data through the academic research data processing room or remote analysis system operated by the Health and Nutrition Research and Analysis Division of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention after approval.
Lim Seung-kwan, head of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said, “The data linking the National Health and Nutrition Survey to the cause of death is an important national research resource that can reveal the relationship between health risk factors and death and evaluate the long-term effects of health levels such as people’s health behavior and chronic diseases. We will continue to expand the linkage and opening of national health survey data to support the establishment of evidence-based policies and actively support the revitalization of various academic research.”
