Young people and adults with learning disabilities are being supported to build confidence, explore their creativity and strengthen their wellbeingthrough activities at Trindlemoss Day Opportunities in Irvine

The service, run by North Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership, provides support and opportunities for adults aged 18 and over, helping them participate in activities and lead fulfilling lives

For many young people, their journey to Trindlemoss begins during their final year at school. The Transition team works closely with schools, families and young people throughout the academic year to plan a positive move into adult services

Support is tailored to each individual, with a multidisciplinary approach introduced at an early stage when required to help make the transition as smooth as possible

Among the activities available at Trindlemoss is a Wellbeing Group, established around a year ago in partnership with North Ayrshire Council’s Community Mental Health and Wellbeing team and Health and Social Care Partnership development workers

a safe and supportive environment where people can explore their emotions and feelings through discussion, artwork, games, emotional learning and other group activities

Those taking part have discovered a range of activities they particularly enjoy. Grace, 19, lists art and music among her favourites, while Catherine, 30, enjoys colouring and drawing

Darren, 22, particularly enjoys chatting with fellow group members, including conversations about the Mission: Impossible and Jason Bourne films

Songwriting has also been used as a creative way to explore wellbeing. In the run-up to Christmas 2025, members wrote a festive song inspired by things in their lives that made them happy

The project was designed to encourage emotional awareness and creativity while giving participants a sense of achievement. Working together on the song also helped members develop their teamwork and communication skills while celebrating their individual ideas and contributions

North Ayrshire Council said the work at Trindlemoss reflects its wider commitment to helping people develop positive relationships, build confidence and participate in activities that support them to live well

The transition support offered to young people leaving school also forms part of the council’s commitment to embedding the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child across its services

Article 23 of the convention states that every child with a disability should enjoy the best possible life in society. The council said careful planning between schools and adult services helps support that principle in practice

Councillor Margaret Johnson, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said: “Wellbeing is central to helping people live full, confident and connected lives, and the work taking place at Trindlemoss is a positive example of that priority in action

“The Wellbeing Group, together with the support offered as young people move on from school, shows Council and HSCP teams working together to help people build confidence, develop their skills and feel supported to achieve their goals

“I wish everyone involved at Trindlemoss every success as they continue to support people’s wellbeing, confidence and aspirations.”
