LAE, Papua New Guinea — The sounds of brass instruments and familiar melodies echoed through classrooms, university campuses and school courtyards across Lae as Soldiers assigned to the 25th Infantry Division Brass Band connected with communities through the universal language of music during Exercise Tamiok Strike 2026

Performing at universities, primary schools and secondary schools throughout the city, the band brought together students, educators and community members for a series of musical engagements that highlighted the enduring friendship between the United States and Papua New Guinea. While military training remains at the heart of the bilateral exercise, the performances demonstrated that lasting relationships are built not only through shared missions, but also through meaningful cultural exchanges.

Exercise Tamiok Strike 2026 is a U.S. Army Pacific-led bilateral exercise conducted with the Papua New Guinea Defence Force that strengthens interoperability, readiness and military-to-military relationships through joint training, engineering, medical and leader engagements. The exercise demonstrates the enduring relationship between the United States and Papua New Guinea while enhancing the ability of both forces to respond to regional security and humanitarian challenges across the Indo-Pacific.

At each performance, students gathered with excitement as the band’s repertoire blended recognizable American favorites with internationally known music, creating an atmosphere where smiles, applause and curiosity transcended language and cultural differences. For many young audience members, the visit provided a unique opportunity to interact with U.S. Soldiers in a setting centered on music, friendship and mutual respect

The community engagements reflected the broader purpose of Tamiok Strike 2026 by fostering people-to-people connections that complement the exercise’s military objectives. While service members from both nations train together to improve readiness and interoperability, events like the band’s performances help strengthen the personal relationships that form the foundation of long-term relationships

The visit also carries historical significance. During World War II, Soldiers of the 25th Infantry Division served throughout the Southwest Pacific, contributing to Allied operations that helped secure the region and preserve critical lines of communication. Although the division’s principal campaigns took place beyond Papua New Guinea, its service in the Pacific represents a shared legacy of sacrifice and commitment to regional security that continues today through engagements across the Indo-Pacific.

More than eight decades later, the division’s return to Papua New Guinea reflects a relationship that has evolved from wartime cooperation to enduring relationship. Instead of the sounds of conflict that once defined the Pacific, communities in Lae were welcomed by the sounds of music, an expression of friendship, goodwill and shared purpose

For students, the performances offered more than entertainment. They provided an opportunity to experience another culture firsthand while interacting with Soldiers whose mission extends beyond military operations. Conversations following the concerts allowed students and musicians to exchange stories, learn about one another’s backgrounds and celebrate the diversity that strengthens relationships across the region

For the musicians of the 25th Infantry Division Brass Band, each performance represented an opportunity to serve as ambassadors of the United States Army, building trust and goodwill one note at a time. Whether performing before hundreds of university students or gathered in classrooms of young children, the band’s mission remained the same: to bring people together through music

As Exercise Tamiok Strike 2026 continues, engagements like these demonstrate that interoperability extends beyond tactical training. Strong relationships are built through shared experiences, mutual understanding and genuine human connection. The music performed throughout Lae served as a reminder that while nations may come together to strengthen security, they remain united through shared values, friendship and hope for the future

Long after the final notes fade, the memories created in classrooms, auditoriums and school grounds will remain as lasting reminders of a relationship that continues to grow—one founded on respect, strengthened through cooperation and celebrated through the universal language of music
