A Perth man whose robot vacuum cleaner exploded in his face is recovering well and has reached another big milestone in hospital, his family says

Lachie Perrem was left with burns to about 75 per cent of his body when the robotic cleaning device blew up in his kitchen on July 2

Mr Perrem, from Brabham, spent weeks in an induced coma following the bizarre tragedy, from which he recently woke

Now, his mother Fiona Perrem says in “another positive update”, that Lachie is healing well and is making great progress in hospital

“His grafts are healing well, and the physio team is extremely happy with his progress, especially with the movement in his hands,” she said during the week

“Today was another big milestone as his feeding tube was removed. His face and neck are healing really well too.”

Ms Perrem said “every step forward in a huge achievement” and added they are so grateful for the incredible care he is receiving and for the communities support

“Thank you all for continuing to stand by Lachie and our family as he continues his recovery.”

In an earlier update on a fundraising page, which has already raised more than $40,000, Ms Perrem said her son’s life had been “turned upside down”

“He suffered burns to approximately 75 per cent of his body and is currently under sedation in hospital

“He is facing an incredibly long road ahead, with multiple surgeries, extensive medical treatment, rehabilitation and months of recovery.”

She said the fundraiser was aiming to ease the financial burden of his recovery

“While our focus is on helping him survive and heal, life outside the hospital doesn’t stop,” she wrote

“Bills continue to arrive and he still has financial commitments, including the repayments on his car

“We want to ease as much of that burden as possible so that, when he wakes and begins his recovery, he can focus entirely on getting better instead of worrying about losing everything he has worked so hard for.”

She said any donation would help support any additional expenses during what she described as “a difficult journey”

“The explosion has left Lachie, his fiancee and their housemates without a home,” she added

“Along with his long road to recovery, they now face the heartbreaking task of rebuilding their lives from scratch

“Every message of support gives our family strength during the hardest time of our lives.”

Since its launch, almost 500 people have contributed to the fundraiser, which is more than three-quarters of the way to its $50,000 target
