    Key points

    • A new study finds that body fat matters more than muscle size in male attractiveness.
    • Men and women across cultures agreed on the most attractive male body type.
    • Ideal male bodies had 12-15 percent body fat and a BMI between 23 and 27.

What makes a man physically attractive? Many people think big muscles are the key, but recent scientific studies suggest otherwise. Research published inPersonality and Individual Differences reveals that body fat percentage and Body Mass Index (BMI) play a larger role in male attractiveness than muscle size alone

What Is the Ideal Male Body?

Attractiveness depends on many factors, including culture, psychology, and biology—especially body proportions, fat distribution, and symmetry. When considering the ideal male body type, certain biological features often stand out:

    • Size and physical strength
    • Muscularity
    • Athletic build, with broad shoulders, a defined chest, and large biceps

A key feature of an athletic build is a V-shaped torso. The V-shaped torso is characterized by a waist much smaller than the chest and shoulders much wider than the waist. That is, a low waist-to-chest ratio (WCR) and high shoulder-to-waist ratio (SWR)

Since waist size is closely tied to body fat levels, preferences for certain body ratios may actually reflect a desire for lower BMI and better metabolic health

This raises the question: Which matters more for male attractiveness—body ratios or fat percentage? A recent investigation set out to find the answer

    A Study of Male Attractiveness

The study included 283 participants from China, Lithuania, and the UK. The participants ranked 15 images of male bodies that varied in shoulder-to-waist ratios and body fat levels

Analysis of data showed, “Male physical attractiveness…was related to both adiposity (body fat percent, BMI) and the shoulder-to-waist ratio (SWR).” More importantly, the “dominant factor was adiposity rather than the SWR” across all three countries

In other words, the results showed body fat percentage to be a strong predictor of male attractiveness

These findings support earlier research on female attractiveness, where body fat levels better predicted appeal than body shape alone

Why Does Body Fat Affect Male Attractiveness?

Hormonesmay explain why adiposity affects male attractiveness: Lower body fat is often linked to higher testosterone levels, which could signal good health and strong genetics to potential partners

The Ideal Male Physique: Best Body Fat, BMI, and SWR

In the study reviewed, participants across all countries agreed that the most attractive body fat range was 12-15 percent, with an ideal BMI between 23 and 27. According to the authors, these values align with clinical markers of metabolic fitness and with predictions from evolutionary theories of long-term health

It is important to note that while the overall pattern was consistent, preferences varied slightly by country:

    • UK: 13 percent
    • China: 13.2 percent
    • Lithuania: 14.2 percent

    Ideal SWR

    • UK: 1.58
    • Lithuania: 1.57
    • China: 1.56

These small differences likely reflect cultural factors. For example, Western cultures tend to put greater emphasis on the V-shaped torso, compared to other cultures

Conclusion: Why Lean and Healthy Matter More Than Bulk

What do these findings mean for male attractiveness? They suggest that what makes a man attractive is not just muscle mass or body shape, but having a lean, metabolically healthy body with balanced fat levels

And that the ideal male body (i.e., the most attractive physique) looks like this:

    • Body fat percentage: 12-15 percent
    • BMI range: 23–27
    • Shoulder-to-waist ratio (SWR): 1.57

In summary, for men looking to improve their physical appearance and health, focusing on leanness and metabolic fitness is more effective than simply building bulk
