Women who begin pregnancy with two or more long-term physical or mental health conditions may face a 20% higher risk of miscarriage and a 69% higher risk of severe nausea and vomiting, according to a new study published in The Lancet Public Health
Analysis of Over 2.2 Million Pregnancies
Researchers, led by King’s College London, analysed more than 2.2 million pregnancies and birth events across the UK between 2000 and 2022. As per The Hindu, women with multiple long-term conditions also had a more than two-fold higher risk of venous thromboembolism, a 42% higher risk of pre-eclampsia, and nearly four times the risk of antenatal anxiety and depression
Furthermore, the risks increased with each additional health condition. The researchers have called for the early identification of women with multiple long-term conditions and the integration of physical and mental healthcare throughout pregnancy
However, the authors noted that the observational study relied on routinely collected health records, which may have led to some under-recording of conditions and outcomes
