Lizzo has revealed that she gained 20lbs after reaching her “weight release goal” in January 2025 following a dramatic transformation that saw her lose 60lbs
The 38-year-old singer revealed her weight gain in a new interview while discussing the many reasons she decided to overhaul her lifestyle, starting in 2023
“There are a lot of reasons,” she told The Guardian. “People always want to make it one single headline, one single thing. A lot of things can be true at once.”
She continued: “I was in a place where my physical weight was causing joint pain and aches. I also got to the point where I came off the internet, and all I had was the studio and my thoughts. So I poured myself into the things I could control. My body, my lifestyle. My routines and habits.”

Inside Lizzo’s weight loss journey
Last January, Lizzo revealed that she had reached her “weight release goal,” lowered her body mass index (BMI) by 10.5 and lost 16% of her body fat since 2023
“I did it. Today when I stepped on my scale, I reached my weight release goal,” she wrote in a candid post on social media. “I haven’t seen this number since 2014!” she exclaimed. “Let this be a reminder you can do anything you put your mind to. Time for new goals!”

While her transformation has made headlines, Lizzo has remained focused on her inner growth and staying intentional with her words
During an appearance on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, she opened up about her mindset shift around the term “weight loss,” saying she prefers to describe it as “weight release.”
“I want to be very intentional about the words that come out of my mouth because there’s young people who are watching me and they’re experiencing what I’m putting into the world,” she shared. “They’re applying it to their own experience and their own life just like I did when I was a kid.”

Lizzo has been candid about her weight loss journey, telling Women’s Health in August 2025: “I like how I look now. I still think I’m big. I’m still wearing plus-size clothing
“I have the same rolls. I got the same belly, the same thighs — I think I’m just a smaller version.”
She added: “Body positivity has nothing to do with staying the same. Body positivity is the radical act of daring to exist loudly and proudly in a society that told you you shouldn’t exist.”

Lizzo revealed that she took a slow and steady approach to losing weight, telling The New York Times in March 2024: “I’ve been methodical, losing weight very slowly
“I don’t really see it because if anyone who’s on a natural weight-loss journey knows, losing weight is actually the slowest thing in the world and you don’t really notice it until you notice it.”
