The 11 deaths top the total number of deaths in an outbreak last year
More than six weeks after the last diagnosis of Legionnaires‘ Disease on the Upper East Side, the city announced Friday two more deaths had been confirmed and connected to the cluster
“That brings the total to 94 cases and 11 deaths. We are deeply saddened by every life lost, and our hearts are with the families and loved ones who are grieving,” New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Alister Martin posted on X. “There are now no patients hospitalized with this illness as part of this cluster — the last remaining patient has recovered and returned home.”

Martin says his agency’s work is not over. “While the cluster has been closed for 4 weeks, our scientists continue working to match samples from cooling towers with samples from patients. We expect those findings in September, and we will share them publicly.”
City health officials insisted during the cluster that they were proactive. As NBC New York reported in July, at least 110 violations were issued to building owners for failing to comply with rules for cooling tower maintenance
One such violator was 300 East 83rd Street, which is accused of failing to register its cooling tower, according to the city. The building was also issued 10 other violations, with fines of $11,000
Some in the neighborhood continue to feel concerned, especially given that it is the second straight year of a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak in Manhattan, after the cluster in Harlem
That outbreak motivated city lawmakers to pass a new bill requiring cooling tower inspections every 30 days.Â
