Burnout is one of the biggest challenges facing the nonprofit sector. While managing workloads is an important part of the solution, it is not enough on its own

Employees don’t leave life’s challenges at the door when they arrive at work. Financial stress, caregiving responsibilities, mental health, physical health, and uncertainty outside of work can all compound workplace stress and contribute to burnout

That’s why at Public Interest Registry (PIR), we lead with the philosophy that our employees are whole people. Here are three ways we’ve put that into practice

Support employees’ values and keep them connected to the mission

We have a unique advantage in preventing nonprofit burnout: mission. Many people choose nonprofit careers because they want to contribute to something larger than themselves

That sense of purpose can be a powerfulo support employee well-being by helping staff stay connected to the values and mission that drew them to this work in the first place

That said, when people become overwhelmed by day-to-day demands or lose sight of their impact, even meaningful work can become a

A generous vacation policy. At PIR, supporting employee well-being means helping employees stay connected to our .ORG Community, a global network of millions of mission-driven organizations that use the .ORG domain to make a positive impact. It also means encouraging them to take time away from work to reconnect with their values and nurture the part of themselves that was inspired to pursue nonprofit work

Paid volunteer hours. In addition, PIR provides employees with 40 hours of paid volunteer leave each year to volunteer with a nonprofit of their choice. Employees have used this benefit to take service trips, reconnect with local community nonprofits that are meaningful to them, and more

One example: Two of our employees spent several days volunteering with Safe Place for Youth in Venice Beach, California, where they served meals to young people experiencing homelessness. They came back re-energized and particularly connected to PIR’s mission to keep the internet safe and serve for those working to improve our world

Make it easier for employees to take care of themselves

Supporting employees starts with making it easier for them to prioritize their own well-being. PIR encourages employees to invest in their physical, mental, and financial well-being throughout the year

Individualized physical, mental, and financial well-being sessions.Because well-being looks different for everyone, our wellness program offers multiple ways for employees to engage, based on their individual needs—from one-on-one coaching with a paid-for financial advisor, to stress reduction sessions, to employee-led classes like breathwork and chair yoga. This April, PIR hosted our first dedicated Wellness Week, which brought together these resources for preventing nonprofit burnout through a series of activities, educational sessions, and team challenges.

Flexible schedules to prioritize well-being. People often want to invest in their well-being but struggle to find the time, information, or support to take the first step. We specifically design our programs to reduce these barriers. For example, we don’t make employees choose between using their PTO for volunteer work or vacation: We offer designated time for both. Through our benefits program, employees have access to mental health resources, financial wellness sessions and scheduled one-on-one appointments with financial advisors during the workday, making it easier to take advantage of these resources. And we even incentivize employees to complete their annual physicals, helping make preventive care easier to prioritize.

    Accommodate flexible work arrangements

Another important component of PIR’s approach to supporting employee wellness is flexible work arrangements. We allow our employees to work from home three days per week, because we know that flexibility can make a meaningful difference in their day-to-day lives. Flexibility helps address burnout before it starts by creating conditions that make chronic stress less likely in the first place. It also demonstrates trust, allowing employees greater autonomy over where they work while maintaining accountability and performance.

    Takeaways for preventing nonprofit burnout

Our experience has taught us several key principles nonprofit leaders can adapt to support employee well-being and build more resilient organizations:

Lesson 1: Make your mission your north star

Nonprofit employees pursue mission-driven work because they are motivated by purpose. Nurture that connection to fight burnout

Lesson 2: Expand the definition of wellness

Burnout is rarely caused by a single factor. Effective well-being strategies recognize the connection between physical, emotional, financial, and personal well-being

Lesson 3: Create multiple pathways for participation

Employees have different needs, interests, and preferences. Offering diverse programming helps make support more accessible and inclusive

Lesson 4: Prioritize consistency over perfection

Organizations do not need large budgets or elaborate programs to support employee well-being. Often, small and sustained efforts have a greater impact than occasional large-scale initiatives

Organizations that recognize employees as whole people create more supportive and sustainable workplaces. Following our Wellness Week, one employee remarked that the activities and challenges helped bring colleagues together to share ideas and connect—an important reminder that supporting well-being can also strengthen workplace culture and community
