The global omega-3 market is expected to almost double in value during the next five years, reaching $8.73bn by 2031 from $4.88bn in 2026, according to a new report from MarketsandMarkets

The market intelligence firm forecasted a 12.3% compound annual growth rate (CAGR), citing growing consumer awareness of omega-3’s role in cardiovascular, cognitive and eye health, alongsiderising demand for preventive nutrition solutions

According to the report, marine-derived omega-3s will continue to dominate the sector, accounting for an estimated 93.6% market share in 2026, while docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is expected to remain the leading omega-3 ingredient thanks to its widespread use in dietary supplements, functional foods and infant nutrition

MarketsandMarkets also identified infant formula as the fastest-growing application segment, with a projected CAGR of 13.6% through 2031.

Demand is being supported by growing recognition of DHA’s role in infant brain and visual development, as well as regulatory requirements in key markets

In Europe, infant and follow-on formula products must containspecified levels of DHAunder EUlegislation, helping sustain long-term demand for high-quality omega-3 ingredients

North America is forecast to remain the largest regional market, accounting for 37% of global sales in 2026, although Europe is expected to retain a significant share thanks to strong consumer awareness, established regulatory frameworks and continued investment in sustainable omega-3 production

The report noted that clean-label trends and growing interest in plant-based nutritionare also creating opportunities for algal-derived omega-3 ingredients, particularly among vegetarian and flexitarian consumers

At the same time, ingredient manufacturers areinvesting in technologies that improve stability, shelf life and formulationflexibility for use in capsules, powders, beverages and fortified foods

The market remains highly competitive, with major suppliers including dsm-firmenich, BASF, Aker BioMarine, Corbion, CrodaInternationalandADM continuing to expand their omega-3 portfolios across dietary supplements, functional foods and pharmaceutical applications

The bullish outlook comes as scientific and regulatory interest in DHA continues to grow

Earlier this year, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reaffirmed a safe supplemental intake level of 1 g/day of DHA, underscoring the ingredient’s established role in nutrition while highlighting ongoing research into novel omega-3
