MUMBAI: The healthiest screen habit may begin with pressing pause not on the device, but on the debate. Google India and YouTube have launched a free Digital Wellbeing Guidebook for Indian families, aiming to help parents and children develop healthier digital habits through conversation, shared responsibility and practical guidance rather than rigid screen-time rules, according to a Moneycontrol report

Created in consultation with experts from NIMHANS, Fortis Healthcare, parenting advocates and digital wellbeing specialists, the guidebook is designed as a roadmap for navigating modern family life, where smartphones have become integral to education, entertainment, communication and financial transactions

Rather than advocating blanket restrictions, the guide encourages families to adopt evidence-based practices that promote balanced technology use while fostering trust between parents and children

One of its central recommendations is that parents should avoid abruptly taking devices away from children, noting that such actions often trigger conflict instead of encouraging healthier digital behaviour. Instead, it recommends open conversations about technology use and jointly agreed family rules

Among its practical suggestions are creating family media agreements, introducing tech-free zones at home and encouraging parents to take an active interest in their children’s online experiences rather than relying solely on monitoring or restrictions

Recognising the realities of many Indian households, where smartphones and tablets are frequently shared, the guide also addresses challenges such as balancing screen time with academics, sharing devices safely and protecting children from online risks

To support safer digital experiences, the handbook highlights tools such as YouTube’s “Who’s Watching” profiles, which allow children to access age-appropriate content while preserving the privacy and recommendations of adult users sharing the same device

Beyond screen management, the guide also covers digital literacy, online safety and financial fraud awareness, acknowledging that young people increasingly use the internet not only for entertainment but also for learning, creativity and everyday financial activities

Experts associated with the initiative argue that technology-related disagreements often arise when boundaries are imposed without discussion. The guide therefore advocates a collaborative approach, encouraging parents and children to establish responsible digital practices together

The launch comes amid growing concerns over screen dependency, online safety and children’s digital wellbeing as smartphone and internet usage continue to expand across India. As digital life becomes inseparable from daily life, Google and YouTube’s latest initiative suggests that the goal is not to reduce screen time at any cost, but to help families make the time they spend online safer, healthier and more meaningful
