Google India, YouTube launch Digital Wellbeing Guidebook to help families build healthier screen habits
Google India and YouTube have launched a free Digital Wellbeing Guidebook for Indian Families to help parents and children build healthier screen habits, improve online safety and foster more balanced relationships with technology, reports Moneycontrol
The guidebook has been developed in consultation with experts from NIMHANS, Fortis Healthcare, parenting advocates, and other experts, with the aim of presenting a roadmap for conversations that go far beyond restrictions on screen time, and instead motivate families to adopt practical, evidence-based approaches to digital wellbeing
The initiative is aimed specifically at Indian households, where the use of smartphones and digital devices is on the rise for education, entertainment, communication and financial transactions, Moneycontrol noted. Instead of pushing for strict restrictions, the guidebook emphasized the importance of helping parents and children develop healthy technology usage habits collaboratively
The reather suggested open discussions about technology use and the development of family-wide rules. It suggested developing family media agreements, developing tech-free zones in the home and being involved in children’s digital lives
The guidebook focuses on addressing issues more specific to Indian households, such as balancing screen time and academics, sharing devices and keeping children safe from online dangers. The guide also mentions rep children safe and maintain privacy for the adults using the same device
The guidebook further includes recommendations on digital literacy, online safety and financial fraud awareness, recognising that young people increasingly use the internet not just for entertainment but also for learning, creating and exploring new opportunities
Experts associated with the initiative argue that technology-related conflicts often arise when restrictions are imposed without discussion. Therefore, the guide recommends a collaborative approach between parents and children to set boundaries and responsible digital practices
The launch comes amid growing concerns about screen dependency, online safety and children’s digital wellbeing as internet access and smartphone usage continues to grow across India
